2025 OTF Championships Preview

PREVIEW | Mountain Lions Primed for 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships

THIS WEEK'S ACTION
  • Coming off a sweep of last month's outdoor conference championship meet, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's and women's track & field teams will look to keep their momentum rolling this weekend as they have a group of 15 student-athletes heading to the nearby campus of Colorado State University Pueblo for the 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
  • Taking place inside the CSUP ThunderBowl, the three-day national championship meet is set to begin on Thursday, May 22 and will conclude on Saturday, May 24. A full schedule of the competition times for all UCCS competitors can be found HERE.
MEET INFORMATION LIVE STREAM
  • The primary live stream for all three days of the 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships can be found on the NCAA website, while the throws events will be streamed on the RMAC Network.
  • The NCAA's streaming coverage will begin at 4:30 p.m. for each day of the championship meet.

WEATHER
  • The forecast for Pueblo, Colo. is calling for mostly sunny skies throughout the entirety of the meet with temperatures for the first day of action sitting in the upper 70s. The temperature is expected to spike into the 90s for Friday's activity before coming back down to the mid-70s on Saturday.
NATIONAL QUALIFIERS
  • The Mountain Lions have 15 student-athletes set to compete at this season's outdoor national championship meet across 11 individual entries and two relay entries.

  • In the Week 8 Pre-Championship edition of the USTFCCCA National Track & Field Rating Index that was released earlier this afternoon, the UCCS men's track & field team earned a No. 15 ranking with 104.60 TFRI points, marking their second-highest position in the poll this outdoor season.

2025 OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD SEASON IN-REVIEW
  • The UCCS men's and women's teams combined to record a total of 35 NCAA provisional qualifying marks throughout the 2025 outdoor season. Click HERE to view a breakdown of each provisional mark and where they finished the season ranked among NCAA Division II competition. 
  • The Mountain Lions put together an incredible showing at the 2025 RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships as they engineered a sweep of the men's and women's titles. On the men's side, UCCS scored a program-record 198 points to secure their fifth consecutive outdoor conference title with a three-point victory over Colorado School of Mines, while the women's team defeated Mines by 15 points for their fifth outdoor title in the last six contested championship with a 172-point display.
  • UCCS tallied a total of 28 podium finishes across the three-day conference championship meet, including 17 on the men's side and 11 on the women's side. Of those podium appearances, the Mountain Lions had nine gold medalists, 10 silver medalists, and nine bronze medalists.
  • Redshirt sophomore KJ McInnis was named the Dr. Randy Rhine Men's RMAC Performer of the Meet as the highest point scorer among all men's student-athletes. The standout jumper scored a total of 26 points as he earned gold medals in the triple jump and high jump in addition to a bronze medal in the long jump.
  • Following the outdoor conference championship meet, the league office revealed the all-conference honors and major awards for the 2025 outdoor track & field season. The UCCS men's and women's teams secured a total of 63 All-RMAC accolades while McInnis was named the Men's Co-Field Athlete of the Year and Head Coach Ross Fellows was tabbed as the Men's and Women's Coach of the Year.
  • The UCCS men's and women's teams combined to break 11 school records throughout the outdoor season:
  • The Mountain Lions secured one weekly conference award throughout the 2025 Outdoor Track & Field season with Kyle Demos being tabbed as the Week 2 RMAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
  • The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released the 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field All-Region honors on Wednesday, May 14, with 20 student-athletes from the UCCS men's and women's track and field teams combining to notch a total of 22 All-South Central Region accolades. Sebastien Jean, Peyton Nelson, Sean Donelson, and Ashton Whisler finished the season as the top regional performers in the men's 4x400m relay with their time of 3:07.04, while Victoria Malaki was the top regional performer in the women's discus throw at 49.46m.
HOT TAKES
  • The Mountain Lions will be heading to the CSUP ThunderBowl for the fourth time this outdoor season after previously competing at the venue on March 21-22 for the Dr. Dan Caprioglio Invitational, March 28 for the Chuck Haering Invitational, and May 3 for the NCAA Last Chance Meet.
  • UCCS has 12 student-athletes competing at the NCAA Division II outdoor national championship meet for the first time in their collegiate career, including Kyle Demos, Sean Donelson, Luke Hard, Sebastien Jean, Savannah Jorgens, Caiden Macktinger, Victoria Malaki, Donovan Mini, Peyton Nelson, Daryn Ofori-Kuragu, Rachel Richtman, and Ashton Whisler.
  • In addition to qualifying a 4x400m relay squad for the first time in program history, the Mountain Lions also had student-athletes qualify to compete in the men's shot put, men's discus throw, men's hammer throw, and women's hammer throw events for the first time.
  • Jagger Zlotoff is making a nationals appearance in the 1500m for the third consecutive outdoor season after finishing seventh overall and collecting First Team All-America honors in the event in both 2023 and 2024. The redshirt junior from Gilbert, Ariz. will be looking to join Moses Tum, Dakota Abbott, and Afewerki Zeru as just the fourth men's student-athlete in program history to notch at least three outdoor First Team All-America honors in his collegiate career.
  • Anna Fauske is set to appear in the women's 5,000m race at the outdoor national championship meet for the third consecutive season and will be making her nationals debut in the women's 10,000m. A native of Sherwood, Wis., Fauske will be in search of her first outdoor All-America honor this weekend as she looks to add to the seven All-America accolades that she has already accrued across her cross country and indoor track & field career.
  • The 2025 season marks the fourth time in program history that the Mountain Lions have qualified their 4x100m relay team for the outdoor national championship meet. UCCS earned First Team All-America accolades in the event in 2018 and 2023 while securing Second Team All-America honors in 2021. Kymani Sterling is the lone student-athlete remaining from the 2023 relay squad that earned a program-best fourth place finish at the national meet with the current school record time of 39.46s.
UCCS UNDER HEAD COACH ROSS FELLOWS
  • The 2024-25 season marks Ross Fellows' ninth season as the head coach of the UCCS men's and women's track & field programs. Under his leadership, the Mountain Lions have won a total of 19 RMAC Championship trophies (9 Indoor, 10 Outdoor), including the first indoor and outdoor conference titles in both men's and women's program history.
  • A 17-time RMAC Coach of the Year recipient, Fellows has coached a total of 126 RMAC individual event champions, eight RMAC Track Athletes of the Year, 10 RMAC Field Athletes of the Year, and four RMAC Freshman of the Year. The Mountain Lions have become perennial contenders on the national stage under the supervision of Fellows, earning 207 individual entries and 20 relay entries to the indoor and outdoor national championship meets since the start of the 2016-17 season while also recording 15 top 25 team finishes, earning 169 All-America honors, and winning six individual national championships in the same period.
  • In addition, UCCS track & field has performed well in the classroom with Fellows at the head of the program, compiling 61 RMAC All-Academic First Team honorees, five RMAC Academic Athletes of the Year, and 21 CoSIDA/CSC Academic All-America accolades.
