STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team made a 15-stroke improvement from yesterday's round, led by
Colin Prater's six-under 66, and moved into No. 12 in the standings in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Division II West / South Central Region Championships. Prater moved into a tie for sixth in the individual standings with a two-round score of 136 for eight strokes under par.
Prater recorded an eagle on the par-five, hole four, and added four more birdies in today's round. His 66 was two strokes off of his best round of the season and it was his best in the spring. Prater extended his streak of rounds at or below par to six straight and tied for the best score on the course today. He will start Wednesday's final round seven strokes off the leader.
Tanner Comes finished with four birdies on the final six holes and improved his score by one stroke from yesterday with a four-under 68 today. He is one stroke behind Prater in the overall standings and tied for eighth with a seven-under 137 through 36 holes. Comes tied his second-best score of the season and in position for his best three-round score of the year.
Zach Berhost cut eight strokes off his score yesterday and posted a two-under 70 in today's round. He tied his best round of the season and was four-under at the turn.
Blake Young rounded out the Mountain Lion team score with a 74 for two strokes over par, and improvement of six strokes from Monday.
UCCS posted a team score of 278 for 10 strokes under par in the second-best team round of the season, and the best of the spring by seven strokes. The Mountain Lions tied for the third-best team performance today and jumped eight positions in the standings. UCCS is nine strokes out of fifth-place Stanislaus State, which represents the final team that would qualify for the national championships.
The Mountain Lions will be in the final groups to take the course tomorrow in an all-RMAC pairing with Colorado School of Mines and Colorado State-Pueblo. The three teams will tee off at 1:50 p.m., MDT, from hole 10, in the final round.
