Tanner Comes shot a three-under 69 and is tied for No. 15 after the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Division II West / South Central Region Championships at the Brookside Country Club. The Mountain Lions are No. 20 in the team standings with a five-over 293.
Comes recorded five birdies today, with his last on the par-three, hole eight at the end of the round. His 69 was the best of the spring and tied for the second-best in the season. Comes is three strokes off the second-place golfers and seven off the lead.
Colin Prater finished one stroke behind Comes with a two-under 70 in his fifth straight round below par. He made five birdies today, with two in the final four holes of the day.
Ji Jang turned in a four-over 76 and
Zach Berhost closed out the team score with a 78. He made an eagle on the par-five, hole four and finished with a one-over 37 on holes one through nine.
The Mountain Lions are two strokes behind Colorado School of Mines and three behind Stanislaus State and St. Mary's. Fourteen teams finished with a team score below par.
UCCS will continue the championships with the second round on Tuesday. The Mountain Lions will start on hole 10 at 8:30 a.m., MDT.
