LIVERMORE, Calif. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs redshirt freshman Tanner Comers improved by 12 strokes from his first round to his second round today and led the Mountain Lions with an 8-over 152 after the first day of the East-West Invitational at The Course at Wente Vineyards. UCCS tied for seventh in the 12-team tournament with a 48-over 624.
Comes shot a 2-under 70 in the afternoon round to offset his 10-over 82 in the morning. His afternoon performance was his fifth round of the season at or below par and he moved into a five-way tie for No. 15 in the tournament standings. Comes is two strokes out of the top 10 and six out of the top five.
Ji Jang improved by eight strokes today with a 74 in the second round and is tied for No. 29 with a 12-over 156.
Colin Prater is one stroke back in the overall standings with a 157 and improved from an 80 to a 77 in the afternoon.
Blake Young turned in a 79 in the morning and an 80 in the afternoon to round out the Mountain Lion team scores.
The Mountain Lions cut 22 strokes off their score between the two rounds and improved two positions to seventh in the afternoon. UCCS is tied with Concordia of Oregon, and the two teams are six strokes behind Dixie State. Holy Names is leading the team standings with a 13-over 589.
UCCS will tee off at 9 a.m., MST, for the third and final round on Tuesday morning.
