GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team used a pair of 3-2 match victories to defeat Regis in the quarterfinals and Colorado Mesa in the semifinals to reach the 2016 RMAC Tournament Championship match at the Golf Club of Estrella. The top-seeded Mountain Lions will face No. 6 seed Colorado Mines on Tuesday morning for the tournament title.
Zach Tripp and
Chris Reina won both of their matches today. Reina shot a 4-under 68 in the semifinal match against Mesa in his best round of the season and sixth-best for the team, and won by a 13-stroke margin against the Mavericks to earn the team point. He won his quarterfinal match by one stroke in the closest win for the Mountain Lions in the quarterfinal round.
Tripp turned in a 2-over 74 in both rounds, and won his quarterfinal match by two strokes and his semifinal match by eight strokes.
Kyle Southard posted the largest win margin for the Mountain Lions during the quarterfinals with a five-stroke win against the Rangers.
Colin Prater won by two strokes in the semifinals after a loss in the quarterfinals despite an even 72 against Regis.
Prater's 72 was the best for the Mountain Lions in the quarterfinal round, which also doubled as the first round of a 36-hole tournament to decide the RMAC individual champion. He is tied for third in the individual standings and is three strokes behind the lead held by Western New Mexico's Calum Hill. Tomorrow's championship round will also double as the second round for the individual championship.
Colorado Mines reached the championship match 3-2 win against Colorado State-Pueblo in the quarterfinals and a 3-2 victory against Colorado Christian in the semifinals.
Tuesday's action will begin at 8:30 a.m., MDT. Each team will participate in a draft tonight to determine the pairings for the championship match.
