AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team paced the field in today's round with an 8-under 272 as the Mountain Lions tied for the tournament title at St. Edward's Invitational today at Onion Creek Club.
Zach Tripp and
Kyle Southard shared second place with tournament scores of 208 after 65 rounds today.
UCCS shot four strokes better than No. 9 Central Missouri to move into a tie with the Mules with a tournament score of 851. The Mountain Lions went 6-under on the back nine with 11 birdies and an eagle among the four scoring golfers. The 8-under round was the best for UCCS in the 2015-16 season and the best since a 9-under performance in the third round of the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational on March 27, 2012.
Tripp made his first eagle of the tournament on hole 5 today and made five birdies to a 5-under 65 today. It was his best round of his collegiate career and marked a six-stroke improvement from his best round on Monday. Southard went 4-under on his final five holes for his 65 in his best round as a Mountain Lion. The duo finished with the best rounds of the day among the 78 golfers and in a tie for No. 2 in the tournament standings.
Colin Prater shot a 2-under 68 today in a 9-stroke improvement from his first round to his third round. He recorded an eagle on hole 17 in eight eighth round of the season at or below par. Prater finished in a tie for No. 12 in the tournament with a 6-over 216.
Zach Berhost recorded the final team score for UCCS with a 74 in a performance that was five strokes better than his best score yesterday. He made back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18 and was 1-over on holes one through nine.
Chris Reina finished one stroke behind Berhost in today's round with a 75 and tied for No. 27 overall with a tournament score of 220.
The win today was the third for the Mountain Lions this season after the RMAC North and RMAC South tournaments in the fall. UCCS finished at 11 strokes over on the par 70 course this week.
The Mountain Lions travel to Arizona next week for the Western New Mexico Mustang Intercollegiate. The tournament will take place April 4-5 at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz.
