GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team repeated as RMAC regular season championship led by redshirt freshman
Tanner Comes' first collegiate tournament win at the RMAC No. 2 event today at the Tiara Rado Golf Course. UCCS won by an eight-stroke margin ahead of Colorado Mines.
The Mountain Lions will share the 2016-17 RMAC Regular Season Championship with Colorado Mines. The regular season champion is determined by the combined placing of teams at the two fall conference events and the Orediggers won the first event ahead of second-place UCCS.
The Mountain Lions have won 13 RMAC regular season or tournament championships in program history. Today's win pushes the departmental total among all sports to 18 conference championships.
Comes shot a 2-under 68 in today's round and won by a stroke against Colorado Mines' Time Amundson with an 8-under 202. His performance in three rounds was his best tournament score in relation to par by 14 strokes in his fourth tournament of the season.
Colin Prater led UCCS in the third round with a 6-under 64 and improved nine positions for a third-place in the tournament. He made three straight birdies on holes five through seven and recorded seven in today's round. Ten of Prater's 12 rounds this season have been at or below par and he lowered his season stroke average down to 69.33 this week.
Zach Berhost shot a 68 in today's round in his best performance of the week and completed a 10-stroke improvement from Monday's first round. He tied for No. 23 overall with a 6-over 216.
Blake Young closed out today's team score with a career-best 1-under 69 and tied for No. 15 in the tournament with a 2-over 212.
Ji Jang finished 1-over par today and tied for No. 18 with a 214.
The Mountain Lions recorded an 11-under 269 in today's round in the best team performance compared to par since an 11-under in the opening round of the 2011 RMAC Championship. The 12-under tournament score was the best since a 15-under score at the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational on Sept. 15-26, 2014.
UCCS will close out the fall season next week with the California State-Monterey Bay Otter Invitational Oct. 17-18, at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside, Calif.
