Comes, UCCS Second After First Day in Grand Junction

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs redshirt freshman Tanner Comes opened the day with a 5-under 65 in the morning round and is second overall with a 6-under 134 to lead the Mountain Lions on the first day of the RMAC No. 2 event today at Tiara Rado Golf Course. UCCS is second in the team standings with a 1-under 559, and is five strokes behind tournament leader Colorado Mines.

Comes made three straight birdies on holes six through eight in the first round and his 5-under performance was his best score in relation to par by seven strokes this season. He went 1-under in the afternoon with the help of three birdies on a four-hole stretch on the back nine. Comes is second with a 134 and is two strokes off of the lead held by Colorado Mines' George Markham.

Colin Prater improved by six strokes in the second round and finished today with an even 140. He made five birdies in the afternoon and was 3-under to offset his 73 in the morning. Prater is tied for No. 12 and is two strokes out of the top 10.

Ji Jang and Blake Young both finished the first day with a 143. Jang improved from a 72 to a 71 today, but his second round was dropped from the team score that only includes the top four scores among the five golfers. Young lowered his score by three strokes in the afternoon from a 73 to a 70, and his 70 was his best performance of the season. Zach Berhost shot a 70 in the second round, an eight-stroke improvement from the first round.

The Mountain Lions lowered their team score by seven strokes in the second round with a 4-under 276. With this morning's 3-over 283, UCCS has recorded its four best scores of the season in the last four rounds going back to the second round of the NCAA Division II National Preview last week. The afternoon score was the first this season below par.

UCCS will finish the tournament with the final round on Tuesday.
