Patrick Skakel took the tournament lead with a 2-under 70 after the second day of the NCAA Division II West / South Central Region Championships today at Hiddenbrooke Golf Course. The Mountain Lions improved its team score by four strokes with a 309 and moved into No. 12 in the team standings.
Skakel finished the round with an eagle on hole 18 and a birdie on hole 16 to finish the back nine with a 3-under 32. He closed out the first half of the round with birdies on holes 7 and 9. Skakel has a two-round score of 143 for 1-under par and will take a one-stroke lead against California State-East Bay's Adam Stone into Wednesday's final round for the individual regional championship.
Stephen Cook shot a 79 for the second straight day and
Dustin Dalzell improved by three strokes to a 79 for the second and third team scores for the Mountain Lions.
Zach Berhost improved by a stroke to an 81 to round out the team score as UCCS posted the ninth-best team scorecard of today's round.
The Mountain Lions moved past St. Edward's in the team standings and are one stroke behind California State-San Bernardino and two strokes behind Dallas Baptist. UCCS will tee off with those teams at 1 p.m., MDT, on Wednesday from hole 10 in the final round. The NCAA will take the top five teams from the West / South Central Region Championships for the national championships later this month in Conover, N.C.
