VALLEJO, Calif. –
Patrick Skakel recorded an eagle in the third hole of the day and finished with a team-leading 73 as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team turned in a team score of 313 in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Division II West / South Central Region Championships at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club. The Mountain Lions are 25 strokes over par and No. 13 among the 20 teams.
Skakel recorded his best score on the course this season at 1-over par for seventh in the individual standings. He was one of two golfers in the tournament to record an eagle today and tied for the tournament lead on scoring for par five holes. Today's performance was his second-best opening round of the spring season and he is three strokes off of the individual lead.
Zach Tripp and
Stephen Cook both finished with a 79 for 7-over par today. Tripp shot a 35 on the back nine to open his round while Cook improved to a 35 in the front nine to finish the first round.
Dustin Dalzell and
Zach Berhost both turned in an 82 and each recorded a birdie in their opening rounds today.
The Mountain Lions are two strokes away from No. 12 and three strokes out of the top 10. UCCS is 11 strokes behind the fourth-place teams of Chico State and Colorado Mines. The top five teams will advance to the national championships later this month.
UCCS will begin the second round in the afternoon groups at 1 p.m., MDT. The Mountain Lions will tee off with the same pairings as today with Simon Fraser and Western New Mexico.
