VALLEJO, Calif. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs senior golfer
Stephen Cook led the field of 108 golfers by two strokes in the first round, but he moved to a tie for fifth as the Mountain Lions tied for No. 10 after the first two rounds of the Tom Tierney Pioneer Shootout at Hiddenbrooke Golf Course.
Cook opened with a season-best 68 for the second-best round for a Mountain Lion this season. He recorded birdies on half of the holes in the round, including three on par-3 holes. Cook and the rest of the tournament field struggled with high winds in the afternoon and shot a 79 in the second round to move into a five-way tie for fifth. He is two strokes behind the leader.
Patrick Skakel shot a 77 to lead UCCS in the second round and his 74 in the first round put him in a tie for No. 21 overall with 151. He recorded five birdies between the two rounds today.
Zach Berhost's 79 and
Zach Tripp's 80 in the first round resulted in the Mountain Lions' team score of 301. UCCS was tied for fifth after the first round before the winds kicked up.
Kyle Southard provided the third team score in the second round with a 79 and Tripp turned in an 81 for the UCCS second round score of 316.
The Mountain Lions are 10 strokes behind Dallas Baptist, the fourth-place team and the top team from the South Central Region. UCCS is fifth among teams from the South Central Region in today's tournament.
The third and final round will tee off at 8:45 a.m., MDT.
