SANTEE, Calif. –
Patrick Skakel led the University of Colorado Colorado Springs with a 71 in the third round and
Stephen Cook finished with the best three-round score of 222 as the Mountain Lions finished second at the SoCal Intercollegiate hosted by UC San Diego at the Carlton Oaks Golf Club. UCCS finished four strokes off of the tournament winner.
Skakel tied for the second-best performance in the final round among the 39 golfers and was No. 15 overall with a three-round score of 228. He recorded seven birdies during the tournament and led the Mountain Lions with an average of 4.83 strokes on the par-5 holes.
Cook was four strokes behind the individual winners and shot a 73 for the second-best round for the Mountain Lions today. He tied for the tournament lead with 2.83 strokes on the par-3 holes in his best tournament placement of the season.
Zach Tripp shot a 74 for the third Mountain Lion score of the day and
Kyle Southard turned in a 76 to round out the team scoring in the round. Southard finished with a three-round score of 224 for eighth place, and Tripp shot a 227 to No. 14.
Zach Berhost shot an 80 for a tournament score of 229 to place No. 16. UCCS was the only team in the tournament with all five golfers in the top 20.
The Mountain Lions matched their first round score with a 294 today and turned in a tournament scorecard of 892. It was the fourth performance of 900 or lower in the six complete tournaments of the 2014-15 season. The runner-up finish was also the fourth first or second-place performance for the Mountain Lions.
UCCS will be back in California next week for the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout March 30-31 in Vallejo, Calif. The tournament will provide a chance for the Mountain Lions to compete at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Course, the site of the NCAA Division II West / South Central Region Championships in May.
