DALLAS, Texas - Stephen Cook won the first tournament of his Mountain Lion career with a 54-hole score of 3-under par to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team to a third-place team finish at the Dallas Baptist Classic today. The Mountain Lions tied for the best team score in today's third and final round.
Cook shot a 73 on the final day with four birdies to lead UCCS at 2-over par in the third round. It was his first tournament of the season to finish with a score under par and he is a combined 4-over in the four tournaments of the spring season.
Joey Hearn and Matt Vanderbeek both shot a 74 today for 3-over par. Hearn improved by seven positions during the course of the round, and Vanderbeek improved by 12 spots in a four-stroke improvement from Monday's opening round.
Zach Tripp recorded an eagle on the second hole of today's round and finished with a 4-over par 75 for the final team score for the Mountain Lions.
UCCS defeated two teams ranked ahead of it in the latest GolfStat Division II Top 25 national rankings and finished two strokes behind the tournament runner-up and nation's No. 6 Central Missouri. The third-place performance was the highest team finish for the Mountain Lions this season and the second top-five finish in the last three tournaments.
Up Next: UCCS will begin the championship portion of the schedule at the RMAC Championships April 21-22. Action will take place at the Estrella Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz.
