DALLAS, Texas - Stephen Cook shot a 66 in the first round and a 71 in the second round to tie for the individual lead for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team at the Dallas Baptist Classic today at the Hackberry Creek Country Club. The Mountain Lions are third in the 15-team tournament after the two rounds.
Cook's 66 was good for five strokes under par and was the best performance by a Mountain Lion this season. It was the best performance for a UCCS golfer since All-American Kevin Witte matched it in the second round of the NCAA Division II regional championship last May. Cook shot a 71 in the second round and is tied for the medalist honor with St. Edward's Jose Hernandez.
Patrick Skakel is tied for ninth and shot even through the first two rounds (73-69) and is in the mix for his first top 10 finish since the 2011-12 season. He shot 2-under par in the second round for his first under-par performance of the season in a single round.
Joey Hearn recorded his third round of the season below par with a 70 in the opening round and
Zach Tripp shot a 72 for 1-over par for the final team score in the first round. The Mountain Lions led the tournament after the first round with a team score of 281 for three strokes under par in the best team round of the 2013-14 season.
Matt Vanderbeek improved his score by three strokes in the second round to a 75 and was part of the team score was the No. 3 golfer in the second round. Hearn and Tripp both turned in a score of 80 in the second round as UCCS moved to third in the team standings. The Mountain Lions are four strokes behind second place Central Missouri and 12 strokes behind the leader, St. Edward's.
The third and final round will begin at 7 a.m., MDT. The Dallas Baptist Classic is the final tournament before the RMAC Championships April 21-22 in Phoenix, Ariz.
