Skakel Leads Mountain Lions to Third Place Finish at RMAC Championship

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Patrick Skakel finished with his first top five finish in his career and his best tournament score of his career to tie for second overall and lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team to third at the 2014 RMAC Golf Championships at the Golf Club of Estrella. The Mountain Lions turned in the second-best score of the round with a 294 for six strokes over par.

Skakel improved to a 71 in today's round for 1-under par and finished the tournament with an even score of 216. He didn't bogey any holes and birdied on hole 16 for the third time in the tournament. He lowered his season average by more than half a stroke during the conference championship.

Dustin Dalzell and Joey Hearn both finished with a 74 in the final round for their best performances of the championship. The duo combined for five birdies today, and Dalzell edged out Hearn in the tournament score with a 227 to tie for No. 17. Hearn's 228 score, composed of 10 birdies throughout the tournament, tied for No. 22.

Stephen Cook provided the final score for UCCS in the round with a 75, and recorded his third top-10 finish of the season with a 223 tournament score. Zach Tripp turned in a 77 in today's round and tied with Dalzell for No. 17 with a three-round total of 227.

The Mountain Lions have finished in the top three of the conference tournament in 15 of the last 17 seasons dating back to the 1997-98 season, the second year UCCS was a member of the conference.

Up Next: The Mountain Lions will learn if it was selected for the NCAA Division II West / South Central Region Championships at 2 p.m., on Friday, April 25. UCCS was No. 10 in last Friday's South Central rankings, and the NCAA will select 10 teams to compete May 5-7 in Austin, Texas.
