COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (5-0, 2-0 RMAC) women's soccer team will only have two days rest before they host Colorado Christian University (4-2, 1-1 RMAC) at Mountain Lion Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 24 for their third match in seven days.
Wednesday's match will be the first conference game played at home this season. The Mountain Lions opened conference play on the road last weekend with a pair of 1-0 shutout victories over Adams State (3-2-1, 0-1-1 RMAC) and Western State (3-3, 0-2 RMAC). The wins earned UCCS a No. 17 National ranking in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire polls and awarded goalkeeper
Kelly Schroeder Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Colorado Christian found relative success as well in the conference opening weekend and they are off to one of their best starts in program history. On Friday, Sept. 20 CCU hosted Colorado Mesa (1-5, 0-2 RMAC) to pick up their first conference win in dramatic fashion. Mesa held a 1-0 lead until the 85:00 minute mark when the Cougars snuck a late goal in to tie the game. With .02 seconds left in regulation, the cougars notched the game winning goal.
An active offense has been the key to CCU's success this season. The Cougars are currently ranked 11th in the nation for scoring. They also hold the RMAC top spot for points (51) and goals (19) in six games played. A pair of freshman forwards in Mariah Fredericks and Gabriele Blahnik have provided all the spark for the Cougars, combining for nine goals and 19 points on 35 shots. Fredericks's 11 points on five goals and one assist ranks her first in the RMAC for points.
In the all-time series against CCU, UCCS owns a 6-2 advantage since starting the program in 2008. The Mountain Lions have outscored CCU 20-12 in those eight games. In their most recent meetings back in 2012, UCCS handed the Cougars a pair of one goal loses.
On Oct. 5 the Mountain Lions earned a dramatic 1-0 shutout victory at home when sophomore midfielder
Brooke Tominello notched the game winner off a corner kick with 49 seconds left in regulation. The two met again on Oct. 19 in Lakewood, Colo. when UCCS won 2-1;
Agnes Arnadottir was credited with the game-winning goal.
Wednesday's game is set for 7 p.m. at Mountain Lion Stadium.
