Mountain Lions 6th After First Round at Regional

DUPONT, Wash. - Kevin Witte shot three-strokes-under-par and tied for seventh in the individual rankings to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division II West / South Central Regional Championships at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash. The Mountain Lions are tied for sixth among the 20 teams at the championships.

UCCS is leading the RMAC teams in the tournament and second among the 10 teams from the South Central Region. The Mountain Lions are one stroke behind Grand Canyon and California State-Stanislaus and 10 strokes off of the leader, California State-Monterey Bay.

Witte recorded birdies on holes 18, 3 and 7 for his 69 score to open the regional championship. It was his third straight tournament with an opening score under par, and tied for his third-best score of the season. He's three strokes behind the leader, Kyle Beard of Dallas Baptist.

Conrad Isley turned in the second-best score for the Mountain Lions with a 72. He recorded a birdie on his second hole of the round on the par-four hole 11, and used a birdie on the par-three hole 6 to move back to even near the end of the round. It was his best performance over 18 holes since the final round of the Wolf Pack Invitational on April 16.

Eddie DeLashmutt and Spencer Biersdorff both finished with scores of 74. DeLashmutt recorded five birdies in the first 18 holes, while Biersdorff finished with his best opening round since the Mustang Intercollegiate on April 1.

Grant Dean turned in a 77 in the first round with birdies on 8 and 15.

The Mountain Lions will begin play in the second round at 1:50 p.m. MDT on hole 1. UCCS will in the last groups to begin the second round.
