HERSHEY, Pa. - Eddie DeLashmutt improved by three strokes and finished with a 72 to lead No. 14 University of Colorado Colorado Springs after the second round of the 2013 NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship on the East Course of the Hershey Country Club. The Mountain Lions finished with a team score of 302, one stroke off of their opening round score on Monday.
UCCS improved to No. 11 in the team standings with one round of stroke play remaining. The Mountain Lions had the ninth-best round today among the 20 teams and moved within six strokes of eighth-place Central Oklahoma. The top eight teams after three rounds of stroke play will advance to match play and be placed in a bracket for the national quarterfinals on Thursday.
UCCS improved its score on holes 1 through 9, led by Kevin Witte's four birdies. He finished the second round with a shot on the edge of the green on hole nine for his second birdie on the hole during the tournament. Witte finished with a 75 for the second straight day.
DeLashmutt finished the first nine holes of the day - holes 10 through 18 - with an even score of 36 and birdies on holes 12 and 13. He recorded a birdie on hole 1 to move to under par before bogeys on holes 7 and 8 near the end of the round.
Grant Dean recorded birdies on two of the final five holes of the day to finish with a 77 for the third score for the Mountain Lions. Spencer Biersdorff finished with pars on seven straight holes and turned in a 78 to round out the UCCS scoring. Conrad Isley improved his performance on holes one through nine to finish with an 81 for the second straight day.
UCCS is within one spot of matching its all-time best finish in program history from the 2003 national championships.
The Mountain Lions will tee off at 10 a.m. MDT on hole 10 for the final round with golfers from Missouri-St. Louis and Central Missouri.
