HERSHEY, Pa. - No. 14 University of Colorado Colorado Springs finished with a team score of 301 and 17 strokes over par and sit at No. 12 out of 20 teams after the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship today on the East Course of the Hershey Country Club.
Grant Dean, Kevin Witte and Eddie DeLashmutt each finished with scores of 75 to lead the Mountain Lions on the par-71 course. Spencer Biersdorff provided the final score for the team standings with a 76 and Conrad Isley finished the first round at 81. Only seven of the 108 student-athletes in the field finished with scores below par and no team finished below par in the first round.
Dean finished the front nine at even to lead UCCS. He recorded birdies on holes 5 and 6 and helped put the Mountain Lions at one-over par through the first six holes. Witte and Spencer Biersdorff each finished the first nine holes at two over par as the Mountain Lions finished at seven strokes above par at 151 in the first half of the round.
DeLashmutt and Biersdorff both opened with birdies on the back nine, and the team score went down to four strokes over par after Witte birdied hole 11. UCCS struggled, as did most of the tournament field, on holes 12 through 18 to finish at 17 strokes over par.
The Mountain Lions are four strokes out of eighth in the team standings. The top eight teams after three rounds of stroke play will advance to match play on Thursday morning.
UCCS will begin the second round at 7:30 a.m. local time, 5:30 a.m. MDT, on Tuesday.
