PUEBLO, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team split the final regular season doubleheader with Colorado State University Pueblo ThunderWolves.

INSIDE THE MATCH UP
  • Final Score | Game One/8: UCCS 7, CSUP 8 | Game Two: UCCS 4, CSUP 1
  • Records: UCCS (32-16-1, 21-9-1 RMAC) | CSUP (25-24, 17-14 RMAC)
  • Facility | Location: Rawlings Field | Pueblo, Colo.
  • All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions hold a 17-22 record all time vs CSU Pueblo.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME ONE
  • The ThunderWolves would find the plate first after a leadoff double would comeback to haunt UCCS, with three singles coming with two outs to bring the first run home.
  • CSU Pueblo would add to their lead in the bottom of the second inning after a lead off single would be followed with a pair of two out errors from UCCS' defense, as the sloppy defense allowed two runners to the plate, with the ThunderWolves now on top 3-1.
  • The Mountain Lions would find their first runs in the top of the fourth inning, with Bryce Peterson staying red hot at the plate with a lead off double, advancing to third on James Harbison's groundout. Trevor Dale would get a pitch to hit facing a full-count and one out, leaving the yard to center for his 26th homer of the season, and cut the lead to 3-2.
  • Quinn Medin got the Mountain Lions started in the fifth inning, as he deposited a leadoff double into right. He would move up ninety feet on a sacrifice bunt executed by Matthew Shipley, with the run coming home on Bryce Peterson's ground out to tie the game at three.
  • CSU Pueblo would come alive offensively once again in the bottom of the fifth, however, with three more runs coming in to score. A leadoff single got the hosts going, with three two-out hits coming through (single, double, double) scoring the three runs, giving CSUP the 6-3 lead.
  • The Mountain Lions wasted no time responding to the damage, as they would plate for runs in the top of the sixth, giving UCCS their first lead. Trevor Dale led off with a walk before a Brendan Killeen flyout, as five straight singles would  come from Tyler Genrich, Tyler Buchman, Tyson Mayberry, Quinn Medin, and Matthew Shipley. The squall would give UCCS the 7-6 lead, as the Mountain Lions were in control through five and a half.
  • CSU Pueblo would answer back with back-to-back doubles with one out in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at seven, heading to the final frame.
  • Both teams went quietly in the seventh, with UCCS also going in order in the top of the eighth.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Pueblo would earn a one out double, which would be plated with a two-out single, giving the Thunderwolves the 8-7 win in walk-off fashion in the extra frame.

GAME STATISTICS | GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME TWO
  • UCCS wasted no time getting started in game three, as they did all their damage with two outs in the first inning. Quinn Medin would fly out to left, with Tyson Mayberry going down looking on strikes to start the game. Bryce Peterson then singled to right to keep the inning alive for James Harbison who doubled to the gap in right-center to score Peterson from first. Trevor Dale continued his record season with his 27th home run, this time to left-center to give UCCS the 3-0 lead after the first half inning.
  • Fast forward to the fourth for the next run in the game, again going the way of UCCS. Trevor Dale would lead off, taking his first at bat after his two run homer in the first, and knock out the hardest half of the cycle with a triple to the gap in right-center. Nolan Oliver wasted no time in bringing him home, following with an RBI single to make it 4-0 UCCS.
  • The rest of the game from the bottom of the fourth on would only see four baserunners, with CSU capitalizing on one of theirs as Jason Arriola led the seventh with a triple to center to start the final half inning in the seventh. A sacrifice fly for the first out in the inning brought Arriola home, with Jason Fink finishing a complete game performance as he retired the next three hitters. UCCS would take their second game of the series, setting up the opportunity for the series win tomorrow with the 4-1 victory.

GAME STATISTICS | GAME TWO
  • Jason Fink (3-2) gets the complete game win for UCCS, with Tyler Clementz (4-3) also going the distance for CSU Pueblo, but suffers the loss.
  • Trevor Dale and Bryce Peterson each had two hits, with Dale (2), James Harbison (1), and Nolan Oliver (1) all earning RBIs.
  • Cayden Gonzalez, cut down two would be base-stealers of Pueblo, not allowing anyone to move up on the basepaths.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Jack Novak has both decisions in the first two games of the series for CSUP (1-1).
  • Jason Fink allowed just two hits in the second game of the doubleheader, the fewest allowed in a game by UCCS this season. Fink also picks up his first complete game of his career.
  • Trevor Dale extends his lead in Home Runs now with four more than the next best Division II slugger, tying him for the lead in all of NCAA Baseball with 27.
  • UCCS can still overtake MSU Denver for the second seed in the RMAC tournament with a win over Pueblo tomorrow, paired with Colorado Mesa wins in the final three games of their series at MSU Denver.
UP NEXT
  • The Mountain Lions finish up their regular season schedule at 12 p.m. tomorrow in Pueblo for game four.
