HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mavericks got things started with a pair of runs in the second inning, with the Mavericks breaking the ice with a double to knock in the game's first run, as UCCS hurt themselves with an error to allow a second run in the frame.
- Brendan Killeen would continue his dominance at the plate in the Mountain Lions half of the third, and answer right back for UCCS, as he slashed a single to plate two runs for the Mountain Lions and tie the game after two and a half innings.
- A two run homer would restore the narrow lead the way of Colorado Mesa, as the longball was the only blemish against the Mountain Lions in the third inning.
- Mesa then rattled off five runs in the home half of the fifth, as the hosts controlled a comfortable 11-2 lead over the Mountain Lions.
- The Mountain Lions would again respond, as UCCS stayed with it after two quick outs to earn a bases loaded situation thanks to two singles and a hit-by-pitch. Tyler Genrich came up with the bases full and drove one out to center in a huge spot for UCCS, bringing the lead back down to five.
- Mesa restored the lead to nine runs in the bottom of the sixth, as a two-run homer, and a 2 RBI single replenished the advantage, as CMU went to the seventh with the 15-6 lead.
- UCCS enjoyed their best offensive inning in the top of the seventh, as they would score seven, to put them right back in position in the contest. UCCS went single, walk, fielder's choice to score their first of the frame, earning another walk and a pair of singles to plate another. Then with the bases loaded, Tyson Mayberry would walk to force Bryce Peterson home, as the lead was down to six, with three runs in and the bases still full. A wild pitch would bring James Harbison home, setting up Tyler Genrich to do major damage again, launching his second home run of the game, this time a three-run shot, to cut the lead to two. UCCS would threaten to tie as Tyler Buchman walked, and Quinn Medin doubled, to put runners on second and third, but both would be stranded as Mesa stopped the bleeding in the inning.
- Four walks and a wild pitch from UCCS in the bottom of the seventh would allow another pair of Mavericks to the plate, with the pair being the final runs of the game, as UCCS falls in game one 17-13 in Grand Junction.
