Baseball Sweeps Opening RMAC Series vs Colorado Christian

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team sweep the opening series of RMAC play over Colorado Christian.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME ONE
  • UCCS would open the scoring in the first inning when they took advantage of a pair of early free passes from the Cougars. Quinn Medin and Brendan Killeen would both reach on a walk and hit-by-pitch, respectively, allowing UCCS to score the first run later in the inning after a Bryce Peterson fielder's choice, and James Harbison RBI single.
  • The Mountain Lions really put pressure on CCU in the second inning, as they would lengthen their lead, once again taking advantage of CCU miscues. The inning began with three straight baserunners as Tyler Buchman (walk), Ruben Velasco (single), and Quinn Medin (single) all made their way on. Brendan Killeen grounded into a fielder's choice which saw Buchman forced out a the plate, but Bryce Peterson and Harbison followed with back-to-back singles to drive in another pair of runs. Trevore Dale would ground into a fielder's choice but drive in a run, with Matthew Shipley reaching on an error to score another as the Mountain Lions were up 6-0 after two trips to the plate.
  • UCCS added to their lead with another big inning in the fifth, which saw them score seven runs on six hits with two defensive errors. Bryce Peterson's RBI double was the highlight of the inning, with UCCS headed to the bottom of the frame up 13-0.
  • The Cougars found a run in the bottom of the fifth, and UCCS added three in the top of the seventh, as UCCS took game one by way of mercy rule 16-1 in seven innings and secure the series victory.
 
GAME STATISTICS | GAME ONE HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME TWO
  • The Mountain Lions wasted no time getting things going in the series finale, scoring six runs before even recording an out. Quinn Medin and Brendan Killeen again reached base to start, with Medin singling to center and Killeen doubling down the left field line. The hits set up Bryce Peterson's homer to left which gave UCCS the 3-0 lead. The next pair of UCCS hitters would also reach by way of a James Harbison walk and Trevor Dale single, setting up Tyson Mayberry to blast the second three run home run of the inning, giving UCCS the 6-0 lead. A walk and pair of singles would drive in two more runs for UCCS before the inning concluded, with UCCS holding a commanding 8-0 lead after the first half inning.
  • CCU would pull back a run in their half of the first, with the Cougars cutting the lead in half in the third inning. In the third, the Cougars would tally a single, double and two run homer to cut into UCCS' lead 8-4.
  • UCCS continued to ride their hot offense, as they would pull away with consistent scoring for the rest of the contest. The Mountain Lions scored once in the fourth, once in the fifth, with three in the sixth and two in the seventh to bring their total to 15. Colorado Christian would only scratch out two more runs during that stretch as UCCS won 15-6 to sweep the series.
 
GAME STATISTICS | GAME TWO
  • Tyson Mayberry led the Mountain Lions with 5 RBIs, as Killeen, Peterson, and Dale also recorded multi-RBI outings.
  • Killeen, Peterson, and Mayberry all notched three hits in game four.
  • Jacob Brown (1-0) gets the win in his first decision of the season, as Chad Naf (2-1) takes his first loss of the season.
