UCCS Offense Explodes for 17 During Run Rule Victory of New Mexico Highlands

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team walked off New Mexico Highlands University in the eighth inning to secure a 17-5 victory Sunday afternoon. 
 
INSIDE THE MATCH UP 

  • Final Score: UCCS 17, NMHU 5 

  • Records: UCCS (25-8-1, 14-1-1 RMAC) | NMHU (6-23, 1-11 RMAC)

  • All-Time Series: With today's win the Mountain Lions now lead the all-time series against the Cowboys 35-9. 

  
HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Mountain Lions secured the first lead of the game in the first inning with a three-run blast from second baseman Bryce Peterson

  • Tyler Buchman pushed the Mountain Lion lead to four in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run over the left center field fence. 

  • In the fourth inning Buchman and Peterson both doubled their home run tallies, as Buchman launched another solo home run, followed by a two-run shot from Peterson. 

  • The Cowboys scratched their first run across in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a couple free passes and a wild pitch to set up an RBI groundout for shortstop, Lubby Marujo. 

  • UCCS answered in the bottom of the fifth with four runs, coming notably off an RBI single from Ruben Velasco and a two RBI single from Brendan Killeen

  • Trevor Dale worked another run across for UCCS after a leadoff single, advancing to third on a throwing error and scoring on a Matthew Shipley RBI groundout to make the score 12-1. 

  • NMHU Ryan Rodriguez blasted a solo home run in the seventh inning after previously entering the game as an injury replacement. Pinch hitter Rory Swanson then hit an RBI triple and scored on a Jeremiah D'Arezzo double as the Cowboys made the score 12-4 before UCCS could escape the inning. 

  • The Cowboys scored another run in the eighth inning after pinch hitter Vladimire Castro doubled and eventually scored to make the score 12-5. 

  • The Mountain Lions walked it off in the bottom of the eighth inning via run rule, scoring two runs on a Matthew Shipley single, and three on a Ruben Velasco home run, making the final score 17-5. 

 
GAME STATISTICS 

  • Tyler Buchman and Bryce Peterson lead the Mountain Lions with two home runs each. Peterson totaled five RBIs and Buchman notched another hit and run. 

  • All nine UCCS batters recorded hits, with seven hitting safely two or more times. 

  • Gerrit Erickson recorded his fifth win of the season giving up four runs on eight hits and walking one while striking out four NHMU hitters. 

  • Jimi Welsher received the loss for the Cowboys, giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and one walk in just 3.2 innings of work. 

  
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE 

  • Erickson improves his team lead in wins, becoming the first UCCS pitcher of 2026 to reach five. It is Erickson's first time reaching five wins in his collegiate career. 

  • It is the fifth time this year that UCCS hit five or more home runs, and eighth time scoring 17 or more runs. 

  • The Mountains Lions have won three in a row against NHMU and 13 of the last 15 meetings.
