Throwers Break Three School Records at Colorado Running Company Mountain Lion Open

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs track & field team put together an incredible day of competition at the Colorado Running Company Mountain Lion Open on Saturday as three school records were broken in the throws events while the men's and women's teams combined for 17 event wins and 17 NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Savannah Jorgens opened Saturday's action with a huge performance in the women's weight throw as she shattered the women's school record in the event with a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 19.25m that placed her second overall in the competition.
  • The Mountain Lions kept the good times rolling into the men's weight throw competition as senior Michael Roberts smashed the school record and facility record in the event with a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 20.39m to finish first overall out of 19 throwers. Junior Hayden Cuevas earned a second-place finish overall as he destroyed his previous personal best in the event with an NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 19.80m, while junior James Bronzwaig threw close to his personal best in the event with a mark of 16.40m that was good for fourth overall.
  • Another school record fell at the end of the day in the men's shot put, where senior Kyle Demos unleashed a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 17.27m for a first place finish out of 23 competitors in the event. Senior Kane Fobare and freshman Cam Bruns also notched top five finishes in the competition with Fobare claiming third place at 15.81m and Bruns taking fourth place at 15.76m.
  • UCCS added a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the women's pole vault as senior Brooke Peterson and freshman Sienna Boughen both posted marks of 3.80m to claim the top two spots in the competition. Peterson was awarded first-place by virtue of having less misses as she posted a season-best in the event, while Boughen took second place with a massive personal and season best bar clearance.
  • In the Mountain Lions' first men's distance medley relay race of the indoor season, redshirt junior Joseph Impellitteri (1200m), redshirt freshman Harvey Trevino-Patton (400m), redshirt senior Joseph Hamilton (800m), and junior Brett Davis (1600m) completed the race in an NCAA provisional qualifying converted time of 9:50.49 to finish first overall out of two teams.
  • The Mountain Lions had a trio of student-athletes reach the NCAA provisional qualifying threshold in the women's long jump, led by redshirt senior Madissyn Moore with a personal best leap of 5.95m that placed her first overall in the field of 29 jumpers. Freshman Jillian Hennessy took third place with a mark of 5.72m that was just shy of her season-best in the event, while junior Danaya Kinnard also jumped a season-best mark of 5.72m for a fourth-place finish.
  • Reigning RMAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week Krissie Sanders put together another strong performance as she posted the fastest overall time in the preliminary round of the women's 60m hurdles with a personal best NCAA provisional qualifying converted mark of 8.57s before notching another personal best provisional qualifying converted time of 8.55s in the event final to claim a first place finish overall. Senior Abigail Frey took second place in the event as she posted a converted time of 8.87s in the event final, while freshman Colette Bibeault raced to a converted time of 9.08s for a fourth-place finish.
  • The Mountain Lions posted a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the women's high jump as junior Dallis Robinson matched her personal best in the event with a clearance of 1.70m for a second-place finish and freshman Evelyn McClellan notched a personal best mark of 1.67m for a third-place finish. Junior Lilyana Delagarza also finished inside the top five of the 17-person field, claiming fifth place with a bar clearance of 1.62m.
  • UCCS sent six student-athletes through to the final round of the men's 60m dash with senior Daryn Ofori-Kuragu and freshman Noah Brown leading the preliminary field with converted times of 6.88s. The Mountain Lion duo continued to match each other in the event final with Ofori-Kuragu clocking a personal best NCAA provisional qualifying time of 6.79s for the first-place finish and Brown crossing the finish line a split second behind him with an identical provisional qualifying time of 6.79s. The freshman pair of Michael Ryan Cruzado (6.91c) and Julian Brantley (6.95c) also finished inside the top five with Cruzado in fourth place and Brantley in fifth place.
  • In the women's triple jump, sophomore Payton Rodgers earned the event win as she posted an NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 11.75m to beat out the 15-person field of competitors. After posting a provisional mark in the long jump earlier in the day, Hennessy continued to excel as she finished third overall with a personal best mark of 11.53m, while sophomore Sophia Bowser matched her personal best in the event at 11.45m for a fifth-place finish.
  • Sophomore Realiti Smith posted an NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 14.58m in the men's triple jump to secure a third place finish out of 12 competitors in the event. He was followed in the event standings by freshman Jason Lomosi, who finished fourth overall with a jump of 14.49m.
  • UCCS filled up the top five spots in the women's shot put competition with three student-athletes surpassing the 13-meter threshold. Jorgens took first place overall with a mark of 13.48m, while redshirt junior Bailey Young claimed second place with a personal best toss of 13.44m, sophomore Jaedyn Kohn finished in third place with a personal best toss of 13.34m, redshirt junior Grace Solarin notched a fourth place finish with a mark of 12.95m, and freshman Carley Malinowski landed in fifth place with a toss of 12.59m.
  • The Mountain Lions' women's distance medley team consisting of freshman Kate Henderson, freshman Bentley Fitzgerald, redshirt sophomore Olivia Sargent, and redshirt sophomore Madison Brosig teamed up for a converted time of 11:59.44 to finish first overall out of four teams, crossing the line more than 30 seconds before the next team.
  • Sargent returned to the track about two and a half hours later in the open women's 800m run and proceeded to post a personal best converted time of 2:17.44 to secure a first-place finish out of 13 competitors in the event.
  • Redshirt senior Jake Hall secured a first-place finish in the men's high jump as he cleared a bar height of 1.99m to best the nine-person field, while freshman Lyai Lyai claimed fourth place in the competition with a mark of 1.89m.
  • UCCS placed a pair of student-athletes inside the top three finishers in the women's 400m as redshirt senior Gigi Douillard finished first overall with a season-best converted time of 59.45s and freshman Michelle Headley took third place with a converted time of 59.82s.
  • Junior Emma Montoya was the top overall finisher in the 16-person field for the women's mile as she clocked a converted time of 5:00.11, while Henderson returned to the track after competing in the DMR to start the day and posted a sixth-place finish with a converted time of 5:10.59.
  • In the men's mile, freshman Elijah Dafoe earned a first place finish out of 26 competitors as he raced to a personal best converted time of 4:14.24. Freshman Jackson Dalleck joined him as a top five finisher in the event as he notched a converted time of 4:22.45 in his first collegiate mile race, finishing fifth overall.
  • Junior Zane Bullock was the first overall finisher out of 11 sprinters in the women's 200m dash as she clocked a converted time of 25.66s, while freshman Olivia Clay claimed fourth place in a converted time of 26.02s. The Mountain Lions also secured the event win in the men's 200m dash as freshman Michael Ryan Cruzado cruised to a first-place finish in a personal best converted time of 21.89s.
  • The Mountain Lions had four student-athletes advance through the preliminary round of the women's 60m dash with Moore posting a personal best converted time of 7.71 seconds for the third-fastest time in the field followed by junior Taryn Fettig (7.72c) in fourth, freshman Emili Voelker (7.76c) in sixth, and Kinnard (7.76c) in seventh. In the final race, Fettig ascended into third place with a converted time of 7.71s, while Voelker posted a personal best converted time of 7.72s to finish fourth, Kinnard posted a converted time of 7.77s for sixth place, and Moore notched a converted time of 7.85s for an eighth-place finish.
  • UCCS had two of the top three finishers in a six-person field for the women's 5,000m race as redshirt junior Maddie Ruszkiewicz took second place with a converted time of 17:47.59 while redshirt junior Kaya Pillivant claimed third place in a personal best converted time of 17:50.50.
  • Senior Dillon Arvayo put forth a personal best effort in the men's pole vault as he cleared a bar height of 4.72m for a third place finish, while senior Brayden Shaw tied for sixth place with a season-best mark of 4.42m.
  • Sophomore Jacob Silvis was the Mountain Lions' top finisher in the men's 800m as he clocked a converted time of 1:55.63 to secure second place overall, while redshirt freshman Jacob Kinne took fourth place with a converted time of 1:55.88.
  • In the men's 5,000m, redshirt junior Koy Cunningham secured a third place finish out 14 competitors as he clocked a personal best converted time of 14:34.75, while redshirt junior Caden Leal took fifth place with a converted time of 15:05.36.
  • Redshirt sophomore Josiah Billington posted a personal best mark in the men's long jump as he reached a distance of 7.08m to finish fourth overall in the 18-person field. Freshman Jayden Nohr joined him inside the top five, finishing fifth overall with a leap of 7.05m.
  • Redshirt senior Molly Breuer was the fifth overall finisher out of 25 competitors in the women's 3,000m as she clocked a converted time of 10:12.98, while freshman Elizabeth McQuitty made her collegiate track debut with a sixth-place converted time of 10:14.09. Redshirt junior Madison Chavez earned a seventh-place finish as she posted a personal best converted time of 10:18.08.
  • In the men's 60m hurdles, freshman Xavier Sutherlin was the lone Mountain Lion student-athlete to qualify for the event final as he clocked a converted time of 8.47s that registered as the fifth-fastest time in the preliminary round. In the event final, Sutherlin posted a sixth-place finish with a converted time of 8.50s.
BEYOND THE RESULTS
  • The Mountain Lions posted updates to the top five list in the indoor record book for nine different events on Saturday, including the men's 60m dash, women's 60m hurdles, women's high jump, women's pole vault, women's long jump, men's shot put, women's shot put, men's weight throw, and women's weight throw.

  • The Mountain Lions will compete at a pair of last chance meets next weekend as they travel to Boulder, Colo. on Friday, Feb. 20 for the Colorado Last Chance and Gunnison, Colo. on Saturday, Feb. 21 for the Last Chance RMAC Qualifier.
