UCCS Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader Versus University of Jamestown

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team takes games two and three in a thrilling doubleheader match up against the Jimmies.

  • Game 1 Final Score: UCCS 4, Jamestown 3 | Game 2 Final Score: UCCS 12, Jamestown 11

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME ONE

  • In the top of the first with one out and a runner on first, the third baseman hit a ground ball to Bryce Peterson. As he tagged second base and went to throw to first, the runner slid into him. The umpire called interference on the runner as the inning ended. In the bottom of the first, the Mountain Lions could not capitalize with a runner on second as they did not score a run.

  • In the top of the second, an error and a sacrifice bunt got a runner in scoring position for the Jimmies. Gerrit Erickson was able to get out of the inning with his first two strikeouts of the game. In the bottom of the second, Trevor Dale led off with a four pitch walk. A Cayden Gonzalez single up the middle and walk to Matthew Shipley meant the Mountain Lions had the bases loaded with no outs. Robert Vendegrift came up to the plate and walked to bring in a run. A Quinn Medin sacrifice fly allowed Gonzalez to tag up as the Mountain Lions took a 2-0 lead into the third.

  • Erickson got two quick outs to start the top of the third. The Jimmies were able to hit a two out single, but a fly out to centerfield ended the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, the Mountain Lions were able to get two runners on with one out. Unfortunately, the Jimmies turned a 5-3 double play to get out of the inning.

  • In the top of fourth, the Jimmies had a runner on second with one out. But Erickson was able to get out of the inning with a ground out and his third strikeout of the game. In the bottom of the fourth the Mountain Lions were able to get two runners on with two outs. Unfortunately, they could not capitalize, and the Jimmies got out of the inning.

  • Erickson kept his streak going in the top of the fifth inning, getting his fourth and fifth strikeouts of the game and a ground out, as the Jimmies went down in order. Nolan Oliver, Peterson, and Dale started the bottom of the fifth with singles. With the bases loaded and no outs, an infield fly rule was called but was not caught and Peterson was able to score. At the end of the fifth, the Mountain Lions were up 3-0

  • In the bottom of the sixth with a runner on first and no outs, the Jimmies were able to score their first run on an RBI triple by their right fielder. A ground out scored the runner at third and the Jimmies cut the lead down to one. Erickson was able to respond and get his sixth strikeout. Unfortunately, a walk and a double ended the night for Erickson. James Harbison came in to replace him and got a ground out to get out of the inning. Tyler Genrich led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple to left field. A fielding error by the shortstop allowed Genrich to score as the Mountain Lions extended their lead.

  • The Jimmies led off the top of the seventh with a home run to right field. Harbison responded with three quick outs to take the first game 4-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME TWO

  • In the top of the first with a runner on and one out, the Jimmies hit a two-run home run to take the lead. They followed that up with a walk, but Jacob Brown responded with his first strikeout of the game. With two runners on and two outs, Brown got his second strikeout of the game to get out of the inning. In the bottom of the first, the Mountain Lions went down in order.

  • The Jimmies led off the top of the second with a single through the left side. With two runners in scoring position and two outs, Brown was able to get out of the jam with a ground out. Oliver led off the bottom of the second with a double to right field. Dale followed that up with a 2-run shot to center field to tie the game. With runners on the corners and two outs, Medin hit a single up through the left side as the Mountain Lions take the lead, 3-2.

  • In the top of the third, the Jimmies hit two solo home runs to take back the lead. Brown bounced back, getting three outs, including his third strikeout of the game. In the bottom of the third with two outs and Dale at first, Liam Whalen hit a double to put the runners in scoring position. A hit by pitch to Vandegrift loaded the bases for the Mountain Lions as a new pitcher came on for the Jimmies. Unfortunately, the Mountain Lions could not capitalize as they did not score a run.

  • In the top of the fourth, the Jimmies were able to get a runner on first with one out. But Brown and the infield were able to turn a 4-6-3 double play to get out of the inning. Genrich led off the bottom of the fourth with a four-pitch walk and Harbison hit a single through the left side with one out as a new pitcher came in for the Jimmies. With two outs, Oliver walked to load the bases. The Jimmies shortstop and first baseman made a great play to get the ground out to end the inning as the Mountain Lions did not score.

  • In the top of the fifth, Brown struck out the first two batters to get his fourth and fifth strikeout of the game. The Jimmies responded with a single, double, and a walk to load the bases with two outs. Unfortunately, a throwing error allowed the Jimmies to score a run and Brown's night came to an end as Nick Miszuk replaced him. The Jimmies were able to hit a bases clearing double to extend their lead. They were also able to load the bases again and walk in a run. Fortunately, the Mountain Lions were able to get out of the innings as the Jimmies took the lead, 3-9. In the bottom of the fifth, the Mountain Lions could not capitalize on the runner at first as they did not score a run.

  • In the top of the sixth, Brent Woytek replaced Miszuk. Two hit by pitches and a walk loaded the bases with one out. Woytek responded and got a popup and a fly out to get out of the bases loaded jam. Medin, Harbison, and Peterson got on early in the bottom of the sixth. A walk to Oliver allowed Medin to score and keep the bases loaded. Trevor Dale stepped up and hit a grand slam to cut the lead down to a one run game. With a runner on third and two outs, Genrich hit a single to right field to drive in the game-tying run.

  • In the top of the seventh, Jose Zubia replaced Woytek on the mound and struck out the first batter. The Jimmies responded with a single and a walk to have runners on first and second. Mason Hartle replaced Zubia on the mound. The Jimmies were able to score a run on a controversial call at home. Shipley threw a laser to home plate, but the home plate umpire said that the catcher missed the tag. The next batter hit a double to right field and drove in one run, the other runner was called out at the plate after a great throw from Oliver and Peterson. In the bottom of the seventh with a runner on first and one out, Oliver hit a two-run home run to tie the game back up. This was followed up with a Dale walk and then Shipley hit a single to center. With runners at second and third, Benjamin Pailes walked it off with a single as Dale scored. The Mountain Lions won the game 12-11.

GAME STATISTICS | GAME TWO

  • Nolan Oliver went 2-3, with three RBIs and a game-tying home run.

  • Trevor Dale went 2-3, with 6 RBIs and two home runs, including a grand slam.

  • Benjamin Pailes hit the game-winning run on a walk off

  • Mason Hartle (3-0) picks up his third win of the season, Ben Bohlmann (0-1) picks up his first loss of the season.
