HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Patriots wasted no time getting on the board in the match as Riley Olsen jumped on a backwards UCCS pass and fired it past an unsuspecting Nylah Mirshafiei and inside the right post for her first collegiate goal. The strike came in just the second minute of the match as the Patriots continued their hot start to the season.
- The first chance of the game for UCCS came in the eighth minute when Emily Aguilar sent a pass towards the middle of the field, that was continued to Reagan Dare on the left wing by way of Abby Stassi. Stassi's pass had a little too much air underneath it which forced a lofted shot from Dare, allowing the easy save by DBU.
- A dangerous chance went the way of DBU on a corner kick in the 18th minute led to back-to-back shots for the Patriots, but UCCS weathered the storm blocking the first chance with Nylah Mirshafiei jumping on the second shot.
- Moments later it was UCCS getting even in the 19th minute, as the play appeared to just be developing when Emily Aguilar unleashed a shot from 30 some yards out. The strike sailed over the head of DBU keeper Mikaela Gracia and into the top left corner of the frame. It goes down as Aguilar's first of her senior campaign and provided the equalizer for the Mountain Lions.
- The next shot came from the Patriots, but it was all the way in the 40th minute, when McKenna Vela put one on net, but the build up was well defended by UCCS. The back line duo of Jessica Rockwell and Malia Groshong pushed Vela out wide, allowing Mirshafiei make the easy collection at her right post.
- Possession would be traded the rest of the way, but no real chances would materialize for either team, as the squads broke for the half knotted at a goal a side.
- Leslie Miller came into goal as she has followed Gracia in the early matches this season for the Patriots to relieve in the second half.
- The Patriots earned the first chance of the second frame as former Mountain Lion Annie Louthan missed wide left in the 49th minute.
- The first dangerous chance for either side also went the way of DBU, as Skylar Belanger broke free down the left wing, and beat Nylah Mirshafiei with a shot at the left post on the opposite side of goal. Mirshafiei, however, had cut down the angle as the shot rang of the inside of the goal post and stayed out, allowing the Mountain Lion defense to recover and clear.
- The Mountain Lions earned their first grade-A chance in the 69th minute, as Luka Johnson danced her way past the Patriot defenders and tried to pick out the bottom left corner of the frame, but Leslie Miller read the shot and pushed it out of play to the left of goal.
- It was the 87th minute when the stalemate was finally broken, and it was a familiar face as former Mountain Lion Annie Louthan won the race to the loose ball down the right wing and tapped it past Mirshafiei who came out to challenge the play. The play was put under review as is available in Lone Star Conference play. The review took several minutes by the center official, but the goal stood, as DBU took the late 2-1 lead.
- UCCS responded by going right down the field with a chance of their own, but a Luka Johnson pass across was too far in front of a streaking Elise Broberg, as DBU took back over on the goal kick.
- Despite the late effort from UCCS, the Patriots prevail in a tight contest to improve to 3-0-0 on the season, as UCCS drops their first match of the year and moves to 1-1-1.
