HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountain Lions jumped ahead early in the first inning when Hayden Iverson doubled down the right field line to score Caleb Chance and take a 1-0 lead. After the Roadrunners went scoreless in the bottom of the first, UCCS threatened to tack on another run in the top of the second after a leadoff double by Caleb Stubbings but were held scoreless.
- UCCS starting pitcher Gerrit Erickson ran into quite a bit of trouble in the bottom of the second inning when MSUD took a three-run lead on three singles, a walk, and an error. Looking for a response in the top of the third, the first two Mountain Lions reached base safely to set up for an RBI double by Mikey Brinton followed by a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Iverson to tie the game up at three runs apiece. With one out to go and Brinton standing on third, Stubbings hit a ground ball into left field to make it a 4-3 game heading into the bottom half of the third.
- The Roadrunners quickly answered back with two runs on three doubles to go up 5-4 through three innings. The Mountain Lions tied the game back up at five on a single through the right side by Brinton but would give the lead back to MSUD in the next inning by scoring four runs on two wild pitches and a double as they went up 9-5 heading into the fifth inning. MSUD would add another run to their lead in the fifth after holding UCCS scoreless.
- Both teams would be held scoreless in the sixth inning before Stubbings drew a bases loaded walk to kick off the scoring in the seventh. The next two Mountain Lion runs would come from sacrifice flies to left off the bats of Evan Steinberger and Vander Hodges to bring their deficit down to two runs heading into the bottom of the seventh where the Roadrunners would be retired in order.
- The Mountain Lions would tie the game in the top of the eighth inning off singles by Hayden Iverson and Stubbings before heading into the bottom half of the inning where MSUD would be held scoreless.
- With the game tied 10-10 in the top of the ninth, Bryce Peterson reached safely with a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch before moving over to third on a balk. With Quinn Medin up at the plate, Peterson took off for home but was put out by the catcher on his attempt towards the plate to clear the bases. Medin reached on a two out walk but would ultimately not come around to score as MSUD held the game at 10 apiece heading into the bottom of the ninth.
- With no score in the ninth inning, the Mountain Lions loaded the bases in the top of the tenth with two outs but a fly out to center field would leave them stranded and keep the game tied going into the bottom of the tenth. MSUD would go on to end the game in one batter as Easton Amundson hit an opposite field walk off home run to take an 11-10 victory.
