DENVER, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team fell to the Regis University baseball team Thursday afternoon after surrendering nine runs to the Rangers.
INSIDE THE MATCH UP
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
UCCS got off to a nice start thanks to a leadoff double from Mikey Brinton. Kit Wigington would then poke a single through to advance Brinton to third and put himself on first. A nice pickoff from starting pitcher Stephen Moraski made it two outs when Wigington was caught taking too big of a lead. It was then that Hayden Iverson knocked one deep into the outfield gap for a standup triple making it 1-0 headed to the bottom of the first. Despite a runner reaching on a hit by pitch, UCCS made quick work in the bottom half of the inning thanks to starting pitcher Jason Fink.
-
Trevor Dale and Evan Steinberger would continue the hot hitting streak for the Mountain Lions with back to back single with one out to put runners on first and second. A wild pitch put them on second and third, but nothing came from it as the next two batters would go down with outs. In the bottom half of the inning, the Rangers found themselves with the bases loaded with 2 outs. A walk would bring one in and keep them loaded for Garrett Rede who would single and bring two more in. The last action of the inning was a double from Adam Paniagua who scored two more ultimately making it 5-1 at the end of the inning.
-
While the fourth inning failed to add anything to the scoreboard, the fifth inning finally brought some movement. In a bases loaded situation, Hayden Iverson was walked and brought in a run. The next batter, Caleb Stubbings, hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field that scored another. Headed to the bottom of the fifth, the score was 5-3.
-
In the bottom half of the inning, Paniagua sent one deep to extend the lead back to three. Then, a passed ball scored a runner making the lead 4. All of a sudden it was now 7-3 with Regis still on top.
-
In the ninth, the Mountain Lions found a bases loaded situation but couldn't make much work of it as the only run to come from it was a sacrifice ground ball to the second baseman from Trevor Dale. This scored Wigington and made it 9-6, but that is how the game would end.
