HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountain Lions mauled the Cougars with offense in the first inning of play, scoring eight runs on CCU after retiring the side in the top half of the inning. James Harbison led off with a single to third base, then advanced to second on batter later as Bryce Peterson got his day started with a walk. After Kit Wigington struck out swinging Hayden Iverson moved the runners up ninety feet with a single to center. Caleb Stubbings brought in the first run as he earned a walk that forced Harbison home, setting up Caleb Chance to earn an RBI on a ground out to second that saw Peterson come across. Now with runners on second and third with two outs, Trevor Dale plated both runs with a double to the gap in left center. Frustration then began to show from the visiting side, as pitcher Trevor Mathis sailed his pickoff attempt into center to move Dale up to third. Catcher Nolan Ackerman then threw out a single to score Dale, before Dillon Vroman and Harbison both reached on a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively. Bennett Manley was called into stop the bleeding for the Cougars but before he closed the inning with a groundout from Kit Wigington, Bryce Peterson furthered the damage to eight with a three-RBI triple, as UCCS made their way back to defense with a commanding lead after just one inning of play.
- In the third, UCCS would add to their lead when Trevor Dale led off with a solo shot that cleared the scoreboard in left center field. Two batters later James Harbison continued his productive outing with a single, as Bryce Peterson followed with an RBI double to score Harbison and collect his second extra-base hit in as many at-bats.
- The Cougars would find paydirt in the third inning for the first time, as Sawyer Shepherd got things going with a one out single. Will Brassil followed and moved Shepherd to second on his soft ground out to third. UCCS thought they had Shepherd caught out on a pickoff, but a close play was called in Shepherd's favor at second base. The call allowed Nathan Owens to reach two pitches later on a walk, as Lukas Hinze launched a homer to right as he brought in the first three for CCU.
- A two-run homer from James Harbison pushed the lead back to nine for the Mountain Lions in the fifth, as Harbison sent a fast ball over 400 feet to left for his first homer as a Mountain Lion.
- One inning later, Caleb Chance earned his first home run of his career on a solo shot to right center, with Trevor Dale walking to set up Nolan Ackerman's RBI double during the next two at-bats. Entering the seventh, UCCS was well in control at 14-3.
- After both teams retiring the side in the seventh, the Cougars owned the eighth inning, scoring four runs in the frame. A lead-off double followed by two free bases on a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases, setting up Nathan Owens to single in the first two runs. A dropped ball in the infield scored another for the Cougars on Lukas Hinze's fielder's choice, then two batters later, Owens came in on a double play turned up the middle from UCCS to make the score 14-7.
- Trevor Dale's second homer of the game in the bottom of the eighth pushed UCCS lead back to nine as Tyler Genrich, who had walked.
