HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Mountain Lions found themselves on the back heel quickly as it was the former Mountain Lion Anne Louthan who once again hurt her former team. In just the second minute of action, McKenna Vela provided the service into the middle of the field, with Louthan flashing through the defense to meet the ball in the box and float it over the head of Nylah Mirshafiei for the first score of the match.
  • About five minutes later, UCCS defense found issue again with a forward ball that saw Vela in behind with Mirshafiei, but her shot would be directed wide and out of play for a Mountain Lion goal kick.
  • UCCS had an opportunity on a restart in the 15th minute when Abby Stassi was able to earn a foul about 35 yards from the net. Casey Tadlock took the service but lifted it just over the head of Stassi and Brooke Pavlich who were looking for the header at the near post, as UCCS came up empty.
  • Chances cooled off for both sides as the first half matured, but UCCS found themselves with a promising buildup with just over six minutes to play in the half. The Mountain Lions were able to navigate the Patriot pressure and find the weak side on the right wing for Elise Broberg, the ball was run onto in the corner by the sophomore wing back who crossed it into the box. The ball fell at the back post for an awaiting Emily Aguilar who bent at the waist to head the ball into the net and equalize the match at one.
  • The time would run out on the half with the score stale at 1-1, as the Mountain Lions had the better opportunities late in the half.
  • Both teams traded an early chance as play got underway in the second half, as UCCS chance was cleared after an Abby Stassi forward run was crossed into the back of Luka Johnson who was just outside of the box. DBU saw Isabella Medina got the ball deep on the Mountain Lions end with a foul eliminating the Patriot chance on the cross.
  • UCCS would take their first lead in the 54th minute as again it was Emily Aguilar who made her way in on net after Luka Johnson set the ball forward on the far wing. Aguilar cut into the far side of the box on the north end of the field, and beat Leslie Miller on the 1v1 inside the near post for her second strike of the contest.
  • The former teammates would continue to trade blows as Anne Louthan would match Emily Aguilar with her second goal of the match just four minutes later in the 58th minute. Riley Olson got the opportunity started as she penetrated down deep in the Mountain Lion end and drew Mirshafiei out of her net. With Mirshafiei out of position, Louthan entered the scene and spun around to fire a shot inside the right post, as again the match was even this time at 2-2.
  • A golden opportunity for DBU to reclaim the lead came in the 69th minute, but Nylah Mirshafiei was wise too it, again it was Louthan who made things happen as she drove deep in the UCCS near corner, laying off the ball for Joeli Benson atop the 18. Bensen one-timed a shot into the heart of the frame, but Mirshafiei had stayed home and swallowed the opportunity, as the game remained knotted at 2 goals a side.
  • Offensive volume began to tick up in the final ten minutes of the second half as both teams knew the time was running down as each side began to put more opportunities towards net.
  • The best chance in over 20 minutes for UCCS came with just about five minutes to play in the second half when a ball was played forward for Brooke Pavlich who was out wide on the near side of the pitch. Pavlich would make her way into the penalty area and put the ball on net but Miller was there. The Patriot keeper allowed a rather significant rebound back towards Pavlich but the Mountain Lion forward had lost her footing, allowing DBU to clear.
  • UCCS and DBU would wind down the final moments of the second half as the match was headed for extra time.
  • It took only 50 seconds for the Patriots to find the net in the extra time period as it was the leading Patriot scorer McKenna Vela who was the hero, beating the Mountain Lions defense under the crossbar and putting the Patriots through to the National Quarterfinal.
