HOW IT HAPPENED

  • First shot of the game for either side was fired by Taylynn Levi in the ninth minute of action. Brooke Pavlich made the run into the box to collect at the endline before dropping the ball back out for Addison Buehler who found Levi above the 18. Levi let it go from 25 yards but missed wide for the Mines goal kick.
  • First chance for the Orediggers came from none other than Bella Campos who broke through the UCCS backline onto a ball in behind. Campos attempted to one-touch a shot over the head of Nylah Mirshafiei who came out to cut down the angle, but the chance was square off the crossbar.
  • The repress off of the UCCS clearance found Campos once again, this time beating the defense around the edge, but again her shot would find wood work, as it rang off the nearside post and was cleared by the Mountain Lions.
  • UCCS responded by building into the final third themselves, with several Mountain Lions having an opportunity to shoot. Many UCCS attackers would pass on their shot opportunities, but either they did not like the lane or the opportunity would attract a defender. A run into the near side corner from Emily Aguilar would open things back up, as her service would skip to the far side for Mikaela Carlson who fired it off the side of the net to eliminate the opportunity.
  • First corner kick would go the way of Colorado School of Mines who again sent a go ball for Campos that would exit off of Malia Groshong, but UCCS did well to clear the set piece play.
  • UCCS began to turn up the offensive pressure in the dying minutes of the first half as Taylynn Levi was back in with an opportunity on a partial breakaway, but Mines was able to recover as she gathered for her shot, but the opportunity would be blocked. As the teams parted for the intermission scoreless.
  • Mines came out of the gate swinging in the second half as they controlled the kickoff. An opportunity would materialize at the far Mountain Lions post, but a two car pile up of Mattea Morris and Addison Buehler would combine to block the shot. Mines would earn a corner to restart but couldn't capitalize.
  • UCCS came down the other way over the next 90 seconds, earning back-to-back chances first from Levi, then from Luka Johnson, but both would miss wide as UCCS began to press for the first time in the half.
  • Nylah Mirshafiei would record her first save of the game 55 minutes after it began, as a shot for Afton Raso found it's way into her breadbasket off a broken play. Mirshafiei confidently captured the ball at her post and allowed her team to reset.
  • In the 74th minute, Brooke Pavlich would renter with a chance for the Mountain Lions as her shot went just under the bar, forcing a critical save from Allie Lundgren. Less than a minute later, Pavlich worked her way down into the box once again, with her shot again being saved though the rebound went right to Abby Stassi who deposited it into the gaping net for the first goal of the game with 15:28 to play.
  • It wouldn't take long for the Orediggers to respond as the Mountain Lions would give up a corner in the 79th minute. Kaitlyn Manalili would take the corner, playing it perfectly to Natalie Rouse who would head it inside the back post to equalize for the Orediggers.
  • UCCS' best chance to retake the lead came with two minutes to play as a ball over the top from Luka Johnson found the chest of Pavlich who played it down for Stassi. Stassi would put it on frame but Lundgren would be there for the save.
  • In the final minute, Mines again had a corner kick from the far side but UCCS was able to clear, with regulation finishing tied at one goal a piece.
  • UCCS had the first chance of the first extra time half, as a corner kick was placed into the middle of the six yard box by Elise Broberg. The ball would rattle around before the Orediggers were able to clear.
  • Emily Aguilar nearly found the winner moments later on a break away that she put on goal but Allie Lundgren had come out to cut down the angle and deflected it wide. The corner attempt would also be unsuccessful as UCCS couldn't capitalize.
  • With just over two minutes to play in the first extra time half, it was again Aguilar who broke down the Orediggers, but put her shot wide and out of play.
  • The Mountain Lions again escaped a Bella Campos scare in the final seconds of the first extra time half as the leading DII scorer broke free, but her initial touch was too heavy, allowing Mirshafiei to jump on the loose ball. The time would tick out, as the match headed for the second extra time half.
  • With just under four to play in the final extra time half, UCCS earned back to back opportunities off a corner, then a far side shot from Levi, but both would come up empty.
  • The teams would go back-and-forth, but the time would run out, as the match headed for PKs.
