HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountain Lions earned the first scoring chance as they earned a corner kick in the sixth minute, but the line-drive set piece would be defended, UCCS would keep the pressure on, but Mines' defense didn't give in as the Orediggers would clear.
- Brooke Pavlich nearly found the icebreaker in the 10th minute of play, as her header skipped just outside the near post, as Mines exhaled.
- Elise Broberg had an opportunity of her own just minutes later, as a nice build up play found her feet just outside the far side corner of the 18. Broberg would fake a move around the ball then strike it towards the opposite post, as it was just high and wide.
- The first chance for Mines came from the penalty dot but Nylah Mirshafiei was ready. Bella Campos took the penalty for the Orediggers and tried to tuck it inside the left post, but Mirshafiei read it as she dove to keep it out. The ball stayed in play, but Mirshafiei scrambled to cover.
- Minutes later Campos was back in deep as she flashed past the UCCS defense off a pass from Kaitlyn Manalili and tried to pick out the far post, but it stayed out wide.
- That duo would combine for the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute, as Manalili snuck a ball into Campos who was alone just in front of the penalty dot. The RMAC leading scorer didn't hesitate as she buried the ball in the right corner along the turf to give Mines the first goal of the match.
- The Mountain Lions tried to pull even just over a minute later, as a layoff pass was left for Brooke Pavlich ten yards out from the right post, her shot was ticketed just under the crossbar, but Mines goalkeeper Ally Lundgren was able to push it out for the corner. UCCS had two shots towards goal off the corner kick, but Mines kept defensive position to deny the chance.
- With just over 16 minutes to play before the half, Bella Campos nearly found a second as a UCCS drop pass went right to the Oredigger striker, Campos' shot went off the inside of the left post and back to Mirshafiei.
- Campos found a chance just moments later as she directed a shot towards goal from the top of the 18, Mirshafiei was able to lift it high.
- With just over five minutes to go before the break Luka Johnson had a promising chance inside the penalty area, but her shot would rise about a foot over the bar to keep UCCS off the board.
- Neither team would add a goal before the break, with Colorado School of Mines holding the 1-0 lead at the break.
- The Mountain Lions finally found the scoresheet just after the restart of play in the second half, as the strike came in the 51st minute. Luka Johnson opened up the space then dropped a pass for Mikaela Carlson who crossed it into the box, where Abby Stassi tucked it under Allie Lundgren and inside the far post to equalize.
- Just minutes after the equalizer, Bella Campos found her way behind the defense on a miss touch from Addison Buehelr, Campos would dribble around Mirshafiei who came out to challenge and stare down an empty net. However, Campos took one too many touches, allowing Buehler to recover and block Campos' shot out of play.
- With 16 minutes to play, Malia Groshong was whistled for a foul two yards out of the box, giving the Orediggers a dangerous free kick. Bella Campos put it towards frame and Nylah Mirshafiei made the diving save, as UCCS was also able to clear the corner and escape the chance.
- Moments later, UCCS was awarded a PK as Luka Johnson's cross hit the hand of a Oredigger in the box. Casey Tadlock stepped up to the dot, but Allie Lundgren was able to come up with the save to keep the game scoreless.
- Despite quality chances for both sides down the stretch in the second half, neither side could break through, as the match headed for sudden death extra time.
- The first chance in extra time came for the Orediggers just over three minutes into action, as Addison Buehler lost the ball in her feet and turned it over to Bella Campos, but her shot was right at Mirshafiei who made the save.
- Just minutes later, UCCS made their way up the field and dropped the pass to Taylynn Levi, but Lundgren was ready for it. Casey Tadlock had a chance on the repress, but couldn't get much on it as the Mountain Lions came up empty in both opportunities.
- With less than a minute to go both teams had an opportunity, Emily Aguilar for the Mountain Lions who had her shot saved, and Kaitlyn Manalili for the Orediggers, who's shot went wide. Manalili's chance would not be put back in play, as time ran out as it skipped out of play, with the match headed for double overtime.
- Again, it was Mines getting the first opportunity as Callie Fuhr put it on goal, but again Mirshafiei made the read and dove on the loose ball in the box before it could be shot.
- The Mountain Lions continued to have better build ups as time winded down in the extra time period but could not finish the opportunities. Mines had a handful of opportunities, but none made it to a truly dangerous area, as time ran out and PKs loomed.
