Women’s Soccer Draws No. 11 Ranked Spartans in Defensive Battle

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team finishes with a draw against the No. 11 nationally ranked University of Tampa Spartans.

All-Time Series: Sunday afternoon's matchup against the Spartans was the second in UCCS program history, UCCS is 1-0-1 in the series.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • The Mountain Lions' Sunday matchup began with UCCS controlling possession for the majority of the first half while creating scoring opportunities and tallying four corner kicks in the first eight minutes of action.
  • UCCS logged 11 shots with two on goal in the first period but struggled to find the back of the net. The closest the Mountain Lions came to scoring in the first 45 minutes was when graduate forward Amelia McManus had a shot saved in the 11th minute by Spartans goalkeeper Aidan Smith. Freshman forward Megan Davis also had a shot from approximately 35 yards away saved in the 38th minute.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Alexa Malaspina also recorded a save in the opening half in the 28th minute when Spartan midfielder Kate Russell attempted a wide-open look.
  • In the second half, the Mountain Lions added six more shots with just one on goal that came from sophomore midfielder Luka Johnson in the 71st minute and took a strong dive from Smith to record the save.
  • The final shot on goal of the match came from Tampa forward Mimi Cronquist in the 72nd minute who had an open field and fired a shot into the top right corner that was saved with a leaping effort by Malaspina to record her second of the match and kept the draw intact.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
 
  • The Mountain Lions outshot Tampa 17 to three with three shots on goal to the Spartans' two. UCCS led the game in corner kicks with nine while Tampa logged only two. 
  • McManus, Davis, and Johnson were the only three Mountain Lions who logged a shot on frame during Sunday's match.
  • Three UCCS players logged the full 90 minutes on the pitch during Sunday's match as Casey Tadlock, Mattea Morris, and Malia Groshong, all played the full game. 
  • Malaspina also logged the entire 90 minutes with a perfect two saves out of two total shots on frame marking her second straight game recording a clean sheet.
 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
 
  • UCCS moves to 1-0-1 all-time against Tampa after their Sunday afternoon draw.
  • Malaspina finished her second straight game with a clean sheet, marking the second of her career.
  • Before coming into Sunday, Tampa had averaged 10 shot attempts per game, and UCCS limited the team to three total attempts, displaying a strong defensive effort.
