HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountain Lions wasted no time getting their offense going with Mason Pastorello singling in the opening at bat of the contest, then using his plus speed to swipe second. Kit Wigington and Alec Gomez both swatted singles of their own, with Pastorello coming in on Gomez' hit. The Cowboys would then force a double play and a fly out from Caleb Stubbings and Evan Steinberger to escape the inning with only one run surrendered.
- A pair of hits, a wild pitch and a home run brought in two runs for the Cowboys in their half of the first, with the home squad claiming their first lead of the afternoon at 2-1.
- Both teams went in order in the second, but UCCS opened the third with a solo home run from Dillon Vroman to tie it at 2. Gomez would slash his second base hit after two straight outs from Pastorello and Wigington, then come home on a Stubbings double. Stubbings was thrown out at third trying to stretch the double to a triple, but the run had already crossed to give UCCS back the lead.
- After a quiet fourth, UCCS added another push in the fifth seeing Vroman come across on a Pastorello double, with Pastorello being plated on a Wigington single to push the lead to 5-2. Following a Stubbings walk, Steinberger reached on a dropped fly ball in right, with Wigington and Stubbings scoring unearned to bring the score to 7-2.
- From then on it was all Mountain Lions the rest of the way. UCCS scored four in the sixth highlighted by doubles from Vander Hodges and Pastorello. In the seventh, a pair of singles set up Vroman's second home run of the day bringing the contest to 14-2 and cementing the 12-run mercy.
