Roadrunners Earn Series Win Over Baseball Three Games To One

DENVER, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball let a big game three lead slip as Metropolitan State University of Denver claimed the series three games to one.

INSIDE THE MATCH UP
  • Final Game One: UCCS 11, MSUD 15 | Final Game Two: UCCS 1, MSUD 6
  • Records: UCCS (5-19, 2-6 RMAC) | MSUD (13-13, 4-4 RMAC)
  • Facility | Location: Assembly Athletic Complex Baseball Field |Denver, Colo.
  • All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions have a record of 11-21 vs the Roadrunners.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME ONE
  • It was all UCCS through the first two innings of game three, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a three-run homer for Kasey Campbell, with Evan Steinberger launching a solo shot of his own just three batters later.
  • UCCS tacked on another run in the second inning, pushing their lead to what seemed like a comfortable 7-0 advantage.
  • For the next six innings, MSU Denver took control, and would not look back. Scoring two runs in the third, three in the fourth, five in the sixth, two in the seventh, and three in the eighth, the Roadrunners commanded a 15-7 lead and left UCCS with just six outs to respond.
  • Stunned, the Mountain Lions tried their best to shake off the swing of momentum and get back to work in the last two at bats they had remaining, scoring one in the eighth and three in the ninth. Though the Mountain Lions had several more baserunners on board in the final frame, their efforts would go down as too little, too late as they fell 15-11 in the opening game on Monday.

GAME STATISTICS | GAME ONE
  • Kasey Cambell crushed his second home run in as many days, giving him his second of the season as well.
  • UCCS sent six different pitchers to the mound in game three, with Jordan Brown being the only arm to not allow a run. Ryder Mancuso's one run surrendered was unearned.
  • Cole Philip (1-4) suffers the loss for UCCS, with MSU Denver's Gabe Austin (1-1) earning the win for the Roadrunners.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME TWO
  • The Roadrunners picked right up where they left off to begin game four, scoring a run in each of the first three innings of play.
  • Though the Mountain Lions never trailed by more then five, UCCS could not sustain their offensive threats in game four, with their only run coming in on a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
  • The Roadrunners would add insurance, grabbing one run in the fifth and two runs in the seventh to put UCCS on the canvas, taking game four by a 6-1 final.

GAME STATISTICS | GAME TWO
  • Aaron Jenkins owned the lone RBI for UCCS in the series finale.
  • Despite giving up three runs, UCCS starter Colton Trudeau had a solid day on the mound, walking none and striking out three.
  • UCCS' Trudeau (0-2) takes the loss, with MSU Denver's Brad Helton (2-3) gaining the victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • UCCS out hit MSU Denver in both games, besting the Roadrunners 29-24 in hits combined in games three and four.
  • The Roadrunners earned nine total walks on Monday, with UCCS only drawing eight.
  • Errors hurt UCCS on the final day of the series, committing three across the two games.

UP NEXT
  • The Mountain Lions head for a weekend off, with their next action on the schedule set for Thursday, March 28th when they open a four game set in Lakewood vs Colorado Christian University.
