Records: UCCS (8-7-2, 6-5 RMAC), ASU (2-12-2, 0-10-1 RMAC)
Facility: ASU Soccer/Lacrosse Field| Alamosa, Colo.
All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions hold a 13-4-3 record vs Adams State in 20 contests between the programs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The match got off to a bit of a sluggish start offensively as it took 4:43 seconds for either team to record a shot attempt, finally broken by Malia Groshong who fired a shot high, just before the five-minute mark of the first half.
  • UCCS broke the ice in the 21st minute with Emily Aguilar finding the net off a feed from Fie Steenberg, giving UCCS the 1-0 lead. Steenberg popped a pass gently over the defender, finding Aguilar who touched it to her left and finished inside the left post for the tally.
  • The sputtering offensive pressure continued for both teams into the halftime break, with both teams combining for just six shot attempts in the first forty-five minutes, five for UCCS including the goal and one hit post, and one shot on frame for the Grizzlies.
  • After the break it was all UCCS all the time. The black and gold swarmed the Grizzlies half of the field, holding possession at will over ASU. The Mountain Lions counter punched their first half struggles with nine shots at the Grizzly net, including four in the first ten minutes of the second period of play.
  • In the 55th minute, a foul was whistled against Molly Landcaster of the Grizzlies in the mouth of her own net as she scrambled to help clear a loose ball out of harms way. UCCS' Fie Steenberg who already had an assist on the day, stepped up to the penalty dot and buried the ball into the right side of the cage, doubling the Mountain Lions lead.
  • UCCS controlled play for the rest of the match, peppering five more shots towards the Grizzlies frame, but couldn't break through for any more goals.
  • Taking care of business on the road, UCCS gathers the three points in Alamosa and punches their ticket to the RMAC Women's Soccer Championships next weekend.

STATS FROM THE GAME

  • 11 different Mountain Lions recorded shots for UCCS in the match, including 9 of 11 starters. Only center-back Mattea Morris and Keeper Alexa Malaspina did not attempt a shot.
  • Emily Aguilar scores her sixth goal of the season, which leads the team as Steenberg nets her fifth goal of the season to match Luka Johnson for second most on the roster.
  • Alexa Malaspina made the one save she was called into action for, giving the Freshman her sixth clean sheet of the year, and second in as many matches.
  • The Mountain Lions dominated the ball holding 72% of possession including 71% of their possession in the attacking half of the pitch.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • After a rocky start to the season including a five-game losing streak that saw UCCS start 0-4 in RMAC play, the Mountain Lions responded with six wins in their last seven matches to claw back to fourth place in the conference with one match to play.
  • For the eighth straight season UCCS will play in the RMAC postseason tournament, a streak that dates back to the 2017 season.
  • UCCS turns their attention to Wednesday where they need to secure the win to lock down the fourth seed in the RMAC Women's Soccer Championships and play the first round at Mountain Lion Stadium.

UP NEXT

  • The Mountain Lions will wrap up the regular season at home on Wednesday when they take on the Colorado State University Pueblo Thunderwolves as part of the Storm the Stadium event. The first 250 fans in the gates will receive a free T-shirt.
