HOW IT HAPPENED
- The beginning of the first half started off slow with continuous possession changes. The best opportunity of the early portion of the match came in the eighth minute when Amelia McManus headed a ball to junior midfielder Emily Aguilar who attempted a header that required a fingertip save by CCU goalkeeper Alana Lopp to prevent the first score of the game.
- The Mountain Lions began to settle in and found a great look in the 24th minute when Fie Steenberg dumped the ball off to freshman midfielder Casey Tadlock from approximately 40 yards out of the Cougars' net. Tadlock wound up and fired a strong, dead-center shot that soared over the outstretched hands of Lopp to put UCCS up 1-0.
- After the opening goal, there was a frenzy of goals in the 39th minute. The first came as CCU's Ava Dinverno played the ball into the Mountain Lions' side of the field and ripped a shot that ricocheted off of the left goalpost and was rebounded by Jessie Sims who netted the first goal of the match for the Cougars, making it a 1-1 game. The next score came just seconds later when Jessica Rockwell of UCCS found freshman forward Brooke Pavlich with open space who sent the ball to the top of the net, over the goalkeeper, to go up 2-1.
- The start of the second half was relatively uneventful as the best scoring chance for either side came in the 67th minute when the Cougars' Capri Dewing found Breenalyn Shimabukuro on the outside edge of the right UCCS post. Shimabukuro laced a shot that was saved by a diving Alexa Malaspina, resulting in a goal kick to keep the score at 2-1. The Mountain Lions' senior forward Jadyn LeDoux also had two shot opportunities that both came in the 79th minute, one of which was an open look in front of the goal where she fired a shot directly at the goalkeeper who stopped a chance for an insurance goal for UCCS. The Mountain Lions continued to pressure CCU's offense to result in a 2-1 victory.
