COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs Department of Athletics claimed 2022-23 Steel and Silver Series win for the fourth straight season. The Mountain Lions garnered 43 total points, besting Colorado State University Pueblo by 17 points. This year's win is the Mountain Lions 13
th win in the 16-year history of the series. The Steel and Silver Series took a two-year hiatus in 2019-20 and 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Steel and Silver Series is an all-sport competition that awards four points for each of the sports that both school's sponsor. Regular season meetings are scored in men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball, women's lacrosse and softball, while the conference championship results are used to score men's and women's cross country, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, and men's and women's golf. Five points are awarded to the institution with the highest GPA among those sports for student-athletes who competed during the academic year.
"The Steel and Silver Trophy is something that we take a lot of pride in, given that UCCS and CSU Pueblo are so close to one another," said UCCS Executive Director of Athletics Nathan Gibson. "We have great respect for the CSU Pueblo programs and we know that it means a great deal when we square off with the ThunderWolves. Congrats to our teams and student-athletes as, for another year now, the trophy will stay in Colorado Springs!"
The first institution to tally 35 points each year wins the Steel & Silver trophy. UCCS clinched the 2022-23 Steel and Silver Series in the final weekend of the regular season, winning both RMAC Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, securing eight points toward the Steel and Silver Series standings to bring their total to 38 points. The Mountain Lions added five more points to their total after besting CSU Pueblo in overall GPA. UCCS boasted a 3.34 GPA during the 2022-23 academic year, edging the Pack's 3.21 GPA.
The Mountain Lions' women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, men's basketball, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, and women's lacrosse programs each earned four points toward the total, while the softball teams split with the Pack to notch two points each.
The competition series began in 2005-06 with UCCS winning the first nine years. The ThunderWolves won the trophy three times in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 before the Mountain Lions reclaimed the trophy in 2017-18. The trophy is on display on the second floor of the Gallogly Events Center.
