Men’s Golf Opens First Two Rounds at RJGA Palm Valley Classic in Seventh Place

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team finished the first day of the Western New Mexico University RJGA Palm Valley Classic on Monday in seventh place out of 20 teams after carding a two-round score of 602 (296, 306).

FROM THE TEE
  • Pacing the Mountain Lions through the first two rounds was redshirt senior Travis Bossio, who finished the day tied for 23rd after shooting a five-over 149. Bossio totaled 16 pars and eight birdies on the day as he posted a first round score of 75 before improving by one stroke to card a 74 in round two.
  • Directly behind Bossio in a tie for 26th place was junior Brady Haake with a two-round score of 150. The Gilbert, Ariz., native started his day with a stellar two-under 70 on the back of 12 pars and four birdies, but took a step back in round two with an eight-over 80.
  • Finishing Monday's action tied for 33rd was redshirt senior Barrett Jones, who was consistent across his two rounds as he carded a pair of four-over rounds for a total score of 152. Jones finished the day with 21 pars and four birdies.
  • Junior James Perry rounded out the top four for UCCS in a tie for 44th place as he turned in a three-over 75 in round one before carding a 78 in round two for a total of 153. Perry finished his two rounds with 20 pars, four birdies, and the lone eagle of the day for UCCS.
  • One stroke back of Perry was redshirt junior Brandon Bervig in a tie for 47th place after carding a two-round total of 154 with 19 pars and six birdies.
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • The trio of West Texas A&M University's Kolton Baber, Colorado Christian University's Xavier Bighaus, and  Colorado Mesa University's Cole Beyer lead the 112-person field after the first two rounds of competition after each shooting a two-under score of 142.
  • Colorado Mesa enters the final round of the tournament holding the team lead among the 20-team field with an eight-over par 584.
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • The Mountain Lions finish day one ranked fourth in par-4 scoring at an average of 4.20 strokes. Jones leads UCCS in the same category and sits tied for third overall in the field with an even 4.00 average.
  •  Perry put together strong number on the par 5 holes, tying for sixth in the field with a five-under average of 4.38 strokes.

  • The Mountain Lions will close out the final round of the RJGA Palm Valley Classic tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. (MT).
