CHADRON, Neb. – After one day of action, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's and women's track & field teams both sit in the lead at the 2023 RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, with the men's team recording 34 points and the women's team tallying 28 points. The Mountain Lions tallied four total national qualifying marks on Friday at the Nelson Physical Activity Center while also adding five podium finishes across the seven scored events on the first day of the conference championship meet.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Graduate student Marcus Graham started off the 2023 conference championship meet on a high note as he brought home a silver medal and scored eight points in the men's 10,000m race with a time of 32:07.42. Sophomore Logan Cole also posted a strong effort in the event, coming up one position shy of scoring with a ninth-place finish and a time of 32:35.55.
- In the women's 10,000m race, freshman Jessica Madrid posted a personal best time of 38:02.47 to claim a seventh-place finish in the event and score two points for the women's team. Redshirt sophomore Mason Ingallinera also raced to a personal best time of 38:44.73 in the event, finishing in 11th place overall.
- The Mountain Lions put together an incredible performance in the men's long jump as they had five different student-athletes combine to score 20 points in the event. Freshman Grant Haskins led the way with a personal best and national qualifying mark of 7.32m that was good for eight points and a silver medal. Junior Richard Safoh joined Haskins on the podium, posting a national qualifying mark of his own at 7.28m to grab a bronze medal finish. Redshirt junior Peyton Turnage (6th – 7.19m), redshirt senior Dakota Abbott (7th – 7.06m), and redshirt junior Peterson Bohannon (8th – 7.01m) also posted scoring performances for UCCS.
- The women's long jumpers were not far behind as they had three student-athletes finish in the top-eight of the competition, combining to tally 16 points. Redshirt junior Audrey Bloomquist highlighted the event group with a gold medal jump of 5.77m to score ten points for her team, while redshirt junior Faith Novess posted a personal best mark of 5.53m to finish in fourth place and score five points. Redshirt junior Christine Bailey rounded out the scorers in the event with an eighth-place jump of 5.19m that was good for one point towards the women's team.
- Redshirt junior Justyn Loper added another podium finish for the Mountain Lions in the men's hammer throw, where he claimed a bronze medal and scored six points with a toss of 54.98m. On the women's side of the hammer throw, it was redshirt junior Anna Holland that paced UCCS, earning a fourth place finish and five points with a throw of 50.37m. Redshirt junior Cassielynn Bonner also added two points in the event, notching a personal best mark of 48.00m to finish in seventh place.
- The women's javelin throw rounded the scored events for day one of the conference championship meet, and the Mountain Lions managed to pick up three points in the event with redshirt junior Kamryn Bohlken taking seventh place with a mark of 36.40m and junior Caroline Walters finishing in eighth place with a toss of 36.39m.
- Friday's action got started with redshirt juniors Maggie Remsberg and Faith Novess competing in the first four events of the women's heptathlon. Both student-athletes put together strong starts to their multi event as Novess currently sits in third place overall with 2,856 points after posting PRs in the 100m hurdles, shot put, and 200m dash, while Remsberg holds the fourth position with 2,807 points.
- In the men's 1500m preliminary race, redshirt senior Evan Graff and redshirt freshman Jagger Zlotoff both earned automatic qualifications to Sunday's final race by finishing in the top four of their respective heats. Graff finished as the heat one winner with the fastest time in the 23-person preliminary field at 3:53.61, while Zlotoff took third place in the second heat at a time of 4:01.24.
- Junior Kate Hedlund and sophomore Anna Fauske also put forth strong performances in the women's 1500m prelim as they finished first and third in heat two of the event with respective times of 4:39.23 and 4:39.48 to earn automatic qualifications to the final race on Sunday.
- The Mountain Lions saw each of their three student-athletes competing in the men's 400m prelim advance to the final for the event, led by freshman Sebastien Jean, who automatically qualified by finishing second in his heat with a time of 48.97s. Senior Angel Laca also earned an automatic qualification with a second-place finish in his heat at 49.05s, while Ryan O'Neal finished third in his heat at 49.28s but still qualified for the final with the seventh-fastest time in the field.
- Sophomore Amber Davis punched her ticket to Sunday's final in the women's 400m dash as she notched the fourth-fastest time in the 22-person field with a mark of 57.11s. Sophomore Alyssa Lopez was also in action, posting a time of 59.31s to finish in 13th place.
- UCCS had a large group of eight sprinters racing in the preliminary round of the men's 100m dash and saw three of the eight make their way into the final race for the event. Redshirt junior Brian Mosley Jr. posted the fastest time of the Mountain Lion qualifiers in the event with a heat-winning and provisional mark of 10.49s, while Justice Mendoza and Kymani Sterling also finished in the top two of their respective heats with times of 10.71s and 10.69s. Freshman Mason Pastorello clocked a time of 10.79s, but narrowly missed the qualifying cut as he finished ninth overall.
- UCCS also had three finals qualifiers from the women's 100m dash prelim, with Bloomquist posting the second-fastest time overall in the field at 11.89s, junior Keyanda Bolton posting a time of 12.07s to finish second in her heat and earn an automatic qualifier for the final, and sophomore Victoria Farinas crossing the line at 12.15s to claim the eighth and final position.
- At the men's 400m hurdles prelim, redshirt junior Dillon Andrews clocked a raw time of 53.12s to win his heat and finish second overall in the field, earning an automatic qualification for Sunday's final. Junior Thorben Hast also competed in the event and went on to shatter his personal best for the event by more than one full second to clock the eighth fastest time in the field and qualify for the final.
- UCCS had a pair of student-athletes advance through the women's 400m hurdle preliminary round as freshmen Leyah Martinez and Skylar Hawk both posted personal best marks in the event to grab the fourth and fastest times in the field, respectively, at 1:04.01 and 1:04.09.
