Mountain Lions Claim CSM Hot Dirt Desert Classic Team Win

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team claimed the team title at the 15-team Colorado School of Mines Hot Dirt Desert Classic tournament Saturday evening, owning a tournament best 854.  Held at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz., UCCS shot a 288 in today's round to take a four-stroke win over second place Midwestern State University.

FROM THE TEE
  • All four Mountain Lion scorers finished in the top 15.  Barrett Jones paced the Mountain Lions on Saturday, carding a 69 to bring his three-round total to four-under par 212 (73, 70, 69) for a fourth-place finish.  Jones finished round three tallying seven birdies and seven pars.
  • James Perry, who entered Saturday morning with the individual lead behind 14 birdies and an eagle, finished the tournament in a tie for fifth place with 11 pars today.  His 79 in round three brought his tournament card to three-under par 213 (64, 70, 79).
  • Finishing in a tie for 12th place are Brady Haake and Brandon Bervig who registered a 217 (+1) across three rounds.  Haake hit 12 pars and two birdies while Bervig's 69 today matched Jones for the lowest third round score for UCCS.  Bervig recorded 16 pars, one eagle and a birdie in round three.
  • Travis Bossio was the non-scorer for UCCS after shooting a 222 to finish T25 overall.
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • UCCS held on to Friday's lead to earn the team title.  Their lowest score of the tournament came in round one (282).
  • Runner-up Midwestern State owned the top two individual medalists.  The Mustangs Mason Mikeska and Garrett Leek finished on top of all 81 golfers with a six-under par 210.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • UCCS led the tournament field in par 4 scoring (4.01, +1) and birdies (54).
  • The Mountain Lions finished second in par 3 scoring (3.15, +9) and par 5 scoring (4.85, -9), and they made the fourth most pars (165).
  • Jones and Perry hit a tournament high 14 birdies, while Bervig's 39 pars were the second most.
  • Jones led all golfers in par 4 scoring with a 3.83 (-5) average.  Haake, Bervig and Perry all tied for second place in par 3 scoring (3.00).

  • UCCS will stay in Goodyear, Ariz. to compete in the WNMU RJGA Palm Valley Classic at Palm Valley Golf Club April 3-4.
