Mountain Lions Lead Hot Dirt Desert Classic Behind Perry’s Opening Round 64

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – James Perry tied a school record 64 Friday morning in the opening round of the Colorado School of Mines Hot Dirt Desert Classic, held at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz.  Perry finished both rounds with a 134 to pace the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team to a tournament best -10 par 566 (282, 284).

FROM THE TEE
  • As part of Perry's opening round 64, he tallied nine birdies and eight pars on Friday.  He made the turn on the back nine and drained four straight birdies as part of an eight-hole run that saw him sink seven birdies.  He started round two on par 4 hole No. 4 with an eagle and finished the round with a 70 (-2) behind eight pars and five birdies.
  • Brady Haake and Barrett Jones are currently tied for 11th place with a -1 par 143.  Haake accounted for 21 pars and eight birdies on the day. He claimed a 71 in the first round with nine pars and five birdies.  Four of his five birdies came on the front nine where he shot a -2 par.  All three of Haake's birdies in round two came on the back nine on holes 12, 13 and 15.  Jones hit 12 pars in each round and tallied seven birdies.  He started the day with two birdies and a -1 par on each half of the course.
  • Bringing in the Mountain Lions scorers is Travis Bossio's +2 146 (73, 73).  Bossio, who is in a tie for 18th place, notched 12 pars and three birdies in round one before tallying 11 pars and four birdies in round two.  He finished round two with a strong performance, sinking three straight birdies on the back nine.
  • Brandon Bervig recorded a +4 148 after carding a 74 in each round. He combined to post 23 pars and seven birdies in two rounds.
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • UCCS leads the 15-team tournament after two rounds with their -10 par 566.  They hold a four-stroke lead over Midwestern State University after MSU caught fire in round two to shoot a -13 275.
  • Perry's 134 is the lowest score of all 81 golfers and is four strokes better than Garrett Leek (138) of MSU.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • Perry's first round score of 64 ties the UCCS and RMAC record for the lowest round.  He adds his name to the Mountain Lion list with Colin Prater and Riley Andrews (twice) to card a 64.
  • All five Mountain Lions combined to register 107 pars, 43 birdies and one eagle.
  • After two rounds, 14 players have shot under part in the Hot Dirt Desert Classic Invite.

  • Round three of the Hot Dirt Desert Classic will begin Saturday for the Mountain Lions at 12:54 p.m. (MT).
