Men’s Golf Places Eleventh in Spring Opener

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Competing in their first tournament of the 2023 spring season, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team carded a 299 in the third and final round of the California State University San Bernardino Battle in the Desert Invitational.  The Mountain Lions three-day score of 885 (291, 295, 299) landed them 11th overall out of 16 teams.

FROM THE TEE
  • Barrett Jones paced the Mountain Lions for the second straight day and scored the team's best mark, carding a 220 for the tournament after shooting a 73 today.  Jones, who finished tied for 21st overall, led the Mountain Lions in birdies (10) and added 32 pars over three rounds.  In the final round today, Jones shot an even 36 on the back nine and hit three birdies on the day.
  • Finished tied for 31st overall and second for UCCS is James Perry with a 222 (77, 72, 73).  Perry chipped in two birdies on the front nine and hit par 13 times today.
  • Brady Haake's third round score of 77 put him in a tie for 45th place after recording a three-round score of 226 (74, 75, 77).  Haake posted two birdies in each round this week and added 34 pars.
  • Improving on his score from Tuesday was Brandon Bervig who took off two strokes from yesterday.  Bervig landed in a tie for 45th place with Haake after carding 76 today and a 226 for the tournament (72, 78, 76) to round out the Mountain Lions scorers.  Three of Bervig's birdies today came on the front nine where he posted an even par 36.
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • Cal State East Bay bested all 16 team with an 868, aided by a tournament best four eagles.
  • John Kim of CSU San Bernardino won the individual medalist honors with an even par 210.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • Bervig and Travis Bossio each shaved off strokes from Tuesday.  Bervig improved by two on Wednesday (76) while Bossio chipped off seven strokes (77).
  • As a team, UCCS finished in a tie for first in Par 5 scoring with a 4.70 (-18).  They added 41 birdies, the seventh most of any team, and chipped in 159 pars.
  • Jones' 4.50 on Par 5 holes was tied for the fourth best in the field. 
  • Haake tied for 10th for the best mark in Par 3 Scoring (3.08) and registered a team high 34 pars.
  • Bervig's average on Par 5 holes (4.50) also tied Jones for the fourth best mark in the field.
 
UP NEXT
  • UCCS will head back West next week, March 5-7, for the University of Missouri-St. Louis Desert Classic, held in Las Vegas, Nevada at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
