Mountain Lions Offense Struggles in Season Opener

  • Records: UCCS (0-1, 0-0 RMAC) | CPP (1-0, 0-0 CCAA)
  • Facility | Location:  CPP Scolinos Field | Pomona, Calif.
  • All-Time Series: The Broncos lead the all-time series, 11-9.  Sixteen of the 20 games in the series have been played at Cal Poly Pomona.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountain Lions offense struggled to get moving in the opening innings as the Broncos made UCCS go three-up, three-down in three of the first four innings.  CPP retired the first three UCCS batters to open the season before UCCS' defense took the field.  Making his first career start for the Mountain Lions, redshirt-sophomore Evan Reynolds gave up a double to the lead-off batter and walked the ensuing Bronco.  A flyout put an out on the scoreboard but moved two Broncos into scoring position, but the Mountain Lions defense was in mid-season form as Ronan Hella, Macully Sehr and Caleb Stubbings turned a double play to end the inning.
  • Brad Madison was the first Mountain Lion to reach base when he drew a walk in the second inning but was unable to advance as CPP took down three of the four batters.  The offense continued to put pressure on in the bottom half of the second inning.  With one out and a runner on first, CPP put down a bunt to third base to add another base runner.  Reynolds struck out the next batter, but another walk loaded the bases, before Reynold finished the inning with his second strikeout.
  • Four scoreless innings ended in the bottom half of the fifth inning.  CPP posted runners on first and second base before an error moved them each up one base.  Cedrick Perez batted in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to plate Trent MacKinney.
  • The top of the seventh inning saw the Mountain Lions first three batters at the plate be retired for the fourth time tonight.  The Broncos took advantage in the bottom half of the inning, adding three runs on four hits to take the 4-0 lead while holding UCCS without a hit the remainder of the game.

GAME STATISTICS
  • Graduate student Keegan Shueltz recorded the lone hit for the Mountain Lions in his first game wearing the black and gold.
  • Madison, Tyler Richardson and Hella each drew a walk, accounting for three of the four base runners.
  • Reynolds worked the first two and two-thirds innings in his first action for UCCS.  Reynolds threw 62 pitches and fanned three batters while giving three hits.
  • The Broncos Nin Burns II tallied two hits, both of which were doubles, and scored one run.  MacKinney paced the offense for CPP, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
  • CPP's Rhys Stevens collected his first win of the season, pitching the first 5.1 innings while holding the Mountain Lions scoreless on one hit.  Caleb Reyes picked up the save as he finished the game on the mound, striking out four batters and not surrendering a hit.
