COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer kept the strong offensive play rolling on Sunday afternoon as the Mountain Lions mount a 3-0 shutout victory at home over Fort Lewis College to start conference play undefeated.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: FLC 0, UCCS 3
Records: UCCS (5-1-2, 2-0 RMAC), FLC (1-6-1, 0-2 RMAC)
Location: Mountain Lion Stadium | Colorado Springs, Colo.
Series: UCCS trails the all-time series with Fort Lewis College, 7-15, but have won five consecutive matches against the Skyhawks.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Fabiola Estrada showed out for the Mountain Lions once again after collecting her second brace of the week to put UCCS in the driver's seat early in the match. The redshirt senior chipped UCCS to a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the match after a five-yard goal found the back right corner of net after
Jael Larson and
Sydney Lasater provided the double assist.
• At the 11:26 mark, the Fort Lewis backline had a hard time keeping UCCS out of their side of the field as the Mountain Lions proceeded to pin the Skyhawks back with a
Zoe Sims free kick in the box that Estrada corralled in front of the net and put back in for a quick 2-0 UCCS advantage.
• The Mountain Lions managed to score on their first two shots of the first half to make a statement right out of the gate as the defense took over for the remainder of the half by limiting the Skyhawks to four shots with
Alexis Walker holding her place in frame. The Castle Rock native was a brick wall as she bagged two saves, including an incredible save in the 38
th minute where Walker used all of her 5-foot-10 frame to deflect a shot in the top of frame to preserve the first half shutout.
• Out of the intermission, a two-goal cushion was not enough for the Mountain Lions as they jumped back on the attack in the 53
rd minute where
Makayla Merlo and
Annie Louthan caught FLC out of position to connect on a shallow shot that Louthan buried for the extended 3-0 UCCS lead.
• From that point on, the rest of the game fell in the hands of the UCCS backline who didn't give an inch as a total of three shots were recorded by Skyhawks in the second half, leaving FLC with no goals in the shutout win for the Mountain Lions.
STATS FROM THE DAY:
• UCCS' defense was exceptional once again as the Mountain Lions held FLC to seven shots and four shots on goal. UCCS on the other hand fired off 17 shots with seven shots on goal.
• Fabiola Estrada walks away with four points off two goals in the win.
Annie Louthan also adds two points with her goal in the second half as
