Mountain Lions Finish Tied for 13th at NCAA West/South Central Regional

PUEBLO, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team registers their second straight one-under par round in the third day of NCAA West/South Central Regionals as the Mountain Lions moved up to finish the tournament tied for 13th with an 861 (+9).

FROM THE TEE
  • Sophomore Brady Haake goes one-under par for the second time in the tournament by matching a one-under on Saturday for a 211 (20, 71, 70) to tie for 15th. Haake drained three birdies on the front-nine for a one-under par as he added two more on the back-nine and ended his round with four straight pars.
  • Three Mountain Lions shot even-par with Barrett Jones (T32), Rio Newcombe (T42), and Travis Bossio (T84) all carding a 71. Jones notched even-par on both sides of the course on Saturday by claiming three birdies and 12 pars, including seven pars and one birdie in the first nine holes on the day to help record a 214 for the tournament.
  • Newcombe registered his second eagle of the tournament by making eagle on the par-5 seventh while also adding a birdie on the par-5 fifth to shoot three-under par on the front-nine as he finished the regional with a 215 (75, 69, 71).
  • Bossio improved another three strokes after round three as his even-par 71 was backed by two birdies and an impressive 14 pars to garner a 222 through 54-holes.
  • Turning in a strong back-nine performance was redshirt junior Brandon Bervig (T89) who paired two birdies with seven pars to turn in a one-over par 72 on the day and a 223 for the tournament (78, 73, 72).
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • Colorado State University Pueblo wins the regional tournament by shooting seven-under par (845). The ThunderWolves along with Colorado Mesa University (T2), Midwestern State University (T2), and Oklahoma Christian University (4th) all qualify for the championships tournament by finishing as the top-4 four teams.
  • For individuals, Garrett Leak of Midwestern State and Matthew Pennington of Cal State San Marcos tied for first at nine-under par (204). Liam Allder of Cal State Monterey Bay takes third place at seven-under par and joins Pennington as the two individuals not on qualified teams to advance to the championships.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • The Mountain Lions were inside the top-10 in both par-3 and par-5 scoring for the tournament by shooting 19-over par to tie for the sixth best par-3 score while carding a 23-under par to tie for the fifth best par-5 score
  • As a team, UCCS made 155 pars to tie for fifth most in the regional as Barrett Jones and Travis Bossio tied each other for the seventh most among individuals with 35.
  • Brady Haake paced the Mountain Lions with 15 birdies to tie for the sixth most in the tournament.
  • Rio Newcombe was one of five golfers to make two eagles.
  • The Mountain Lions season comes to an end as they posted their best finish in the RMAC Championships in five years by placing second while also qualifying for NCAA regionals for the first time as a team in four years.
