HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME ONE
The first four innings saw just four runs come across with Adams State being responsible for three runs after plating one in each of the first three innings as an RBI double from Macully Sehr in the second put UCCS on the board with the Grizzlies leading, 3-1.
In the fourth, Jonathan Cowles threw his way to a scoreless inning by stranding a runner on second and fanning a Grizzly for the third out to keep a manageable two-run deficit intact.
Then in the top of the fifth, the Mountain Lions took to the plate to spark an eight-run inning to take their first lead of the game. After Walker Rumsey led off with a single, the Grizzlies retired two Mountain Lions as a pair of walks from Kiichi Sato and Caleb Stubbings loaded the bases up for Aaron Faragallah with two outs. Faragallah wasted no time in the box as the heavy hitter belted a first pitch fastball to dead center for a grand slam and 5-3 UCCS lead. UCCS continued to chip away with two outs and added to their lead in the fifth inning by driving in two runs off a two-RBI single from Sehr and a two-run moon shot from Rumsey for the 9-3 advantage.
A half inning later, ASU was able to get one run back on a single from Mike Bathauer, but Cowles' second scoreless inning in the sixth was followed up by two-run seventh from the Mountain Lions with a Jaeden Hegmann walk scoring one run and Dylan Morace scoring off an ASU error to make it 11-4.
The Grizzlies weren't done and stayed in the ballgame with Matt Bathauer hitting a two-run home run and Chris Garcia providing a sac fly to bring the game within four runs, 11-7.
Both teams kept each other in check during a scoreless eighth as reliever Hunter Owens came on to strand runners on first and third to setup what would be a much needed two-run Mountain Lions ninth. Redshirt freshman Kit Wiginton recorded his first hit of the day with a single up the middle for one RBI as National Hitter of the Week Caleb Stubbings hit a sacrifice fly to give UCCS a six-run cushion for the bottom of the ninth.
In their last at-bats, the Grizzlies would make it a close one by driving in five runs on four hits with one UCCS error to make it just a one-run ballgame with two outs and bases loaded. Freshman Brock Weiss stayed composed and forced a hard groundball up the middle that Sehr extended to field cleanly to then flip over to Sato at second base for a game saving play and 13-12 Mountain Lion win.
