CHANDLER, Ariz. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team puts themselves within striking range through one round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship Tournament with freshman
Rio Newcombe leading the way after turning in a three-under par (69) at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz. With six of the nine teams having completed the first 18 holes, the Mountain Lions are currently tied for fourth place (+1, 289) and just four strokes behind the tournament leader Colorado State University Pueblo.

FROM THE TEE
- The Mountain Lions lowestindividual round belongs to freshman Rio Newcombe who came out to shoot a team-low 69 (-3) to sit tied for third. Newcombe hit the ground running with a birdie on the par-4 first and concluded his day with consecutive birdies on the par-5 17th and par-4 18th to cap off a three-under par on the back-nine.
- Sitting tied for 10th for the tournament at even-par (72) is redshirt sophomore Brandon Bervig. After starting two-over par on the front-nine, Bervig came out to shoot two-under par with four birdies in a six-hole stretch to settle back in at even-par.
- Both Travis Bossio and Brady Haake finish day one of RMAC Championships at two-over par (74) and currently are tied for 18th after combining for nine birdies. Bossio bounced back from a three-over par on the front-nine to shoot one-under par on the back-nine after birdieing two of the last four holes, including a birdie on the par-4 18th. Haake went on to total five birdies on the day with three on the front-nine to help card an even-par as he drained two on the back-nine to round out his 74.
- Barrett Jones (T25) went on to finish a stroke back from Haake and Bossio (+3, 75) in the opening round with a pair of birdies on both sides of the course as he'll look to carry his momentum into day two after carding back-to-back birdies on hole No. 17 and 18.
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
- Colorado State University Pueblo holds a two-stroke lead over Fort Lewis College (-1, 287) at three-under par (285).
- CSU Pueblo's Andrew Ni and Westminster College's Zach Dallimore currently hold on to the lead in the tournament at four-under par (68).
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
- As a team, UCCS is tied for second in par-4 scoring at seven-over par and currently hold the third best par-5 score at seven-under par.
- UCCS leads the nine-team field in birdies with an impressive 23 on the day.
- Individually, Brandon Bervig, Travis Bossio, and Rio Newcombe are tied with 12 others for the second-best par-3 scoring at even-par.
- Brady Haake and Bervig both shot three-under par to tie for the second-best par-5 score among 45 individuals.
- Newcombe puts his name among the top in par-4 scoring at one-under par to tie for the fourth-best score as the freshman also leads the team in pars (13) which ties for the fourth most in the field.
- Bervig is tied for the tournament lead in birdies after draining six on the day as Haake sits right behind his teammate by tying for fourth most (five).
UP NEXT
- The final three teams will wrap up the last holes of round one beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. Round two will begin with UCCS teeing off at 12:54 p.m.
