HOW IT HAPPENED
- There were early fireworks in Saturday's matchup between the Cougars and the Mountain Lions. After being down one run early, Caleb Stubbings stepped up to the plate and put the home squad ahead 2-1 with a two-run blast to left field in the bottom of the first.
- On the first pitch he saw to start the bottom of the second, Tyler Richardson hit a big fly to center field that carried over the wall just to the left of the batter's eye to give the Mountain Lions the 3-1 advantage.
- The Mountain Lions would tack on another run in the inning with Jaeden Hegmann flipping a ball to right center for an RBI single. UCCS would lead 5-1 by the end of the inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of Stubbings.
- The Cougars would spray the ball around the yard in the top of the third to score three runs and get back in the ballgame.
- In the bottom of the fifth, the Mountain Lions loaded the bases with less than two outs. Aaron Faragallah was able to advance home on an infield fly. An errant throw from the Cougar second baseman allowed Brad Madison to score as the ball went to the backstop. A Walker Rumsey single up the middle would score Richardson and bring the Mountain Lion lead to 8-4.
- The sixth inning saw more explosive baseball from the Mountain Lions with a pair of homeruns from Kit Wigington and Brad Madison. They would add another with a Walker Rumsey double down the left field line to bring the score to a 12-4 UCCS lead.
- Both offenses continued to pile on with the Cougars adding four runs in the top of the seventh and the Mountain Lions plating seven in the bottom of the seventh to bring the score to 19-8 in favor of UCCS.
- A scoreless eighth inning brought Brian Marquez out of the bullpen for the ninth inning and the Mountain Lions would seal the 19-11 victory, completing the series sweep.
