Mountain Lions End Las Vegas Desert Classic in 18th

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team cards a team low 301 in their final round of play at the Las Vegas Desert Classic on Tuesday as the Mountain Lions finish 18th at 60-over par (924) for the tournament.

FROM THE TEE
  • The Mountain Lions' round of the tournament came off the club of Travis Bossio (T63) who duplicated his round one score of one-over par (73) by shooting an impressive two-under par on the course's front-nine. Bossio birdied two of the four par-5's while adding a birdie on the par-4 fourth and par-3 sixth to round out a 231 (73, 85, 73) in his first tournament of the spring.
  • Brady Haake (T59) was the top Mountain Lion finish after coming out to shoot a 76 (+4) in the third and final round for a combined 230 (79, 75, 76). Haake got off to a slow start with a bogey in two of the first three holes, but the sophomore settled in to birdie back-to-back holes on the par-4 third and par-4 fourth. A par on the par-5 fifth closed out his first nine holes of play as Haake finished one-over par on the front-nine and made par in four his last five holes.
  • Freshman Rio Newcombe improved five strokes for a 75 (+3) on Tuesday and got off to a stellar start in the third round after jumping out to one-under par in the course's front nine as we went on to finish with three birdies and 10 pars on the day. Newcombe finished with a 235 (80, 80, 75) in three rounds of play and placed tied for 77th in the tournament.
  • Finishing one stroke ahead of Newcombe at tied for 72nd was Barrett Jones who tied his first-round score of a 79 (+7) after notching three total birdies in the round, including two on the back-nine where he shot one-over par.
  • Junior Lucas Howell (T84) also strung together a solid back-nine to end the day as he registered a birdie on the par-4 12th and made par in five of the last six holes to shoot two-over par on the back-nine and card his lowest round of the tournament (77) while finishing with a 238 (79, 82, 77).
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • Host school University of Missouri-St. Louis edged out Florida Southern College by one stroke after carding a nine-over par 873 to win the tournament.
  • Kittiphong Phaithuncharoensuk of Texas A&M University-Commerce held on for the individual win at a seven-under par (209) after carding a three-under par (69) on Tuesday.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • Barrett Jones averaged 3.08 on par-3's in the tournament and finished one-over par to tie for fifth best score.
  • Travis Bossio and Rio Newcombe both shot under-par on par-5's with Bossio going four-under and Newcombe shooting two-under.
  • Lucas Howell, Bossio, and Jones all registered a team high eight birdies with Brady Haake pacing UCCS with 31 pars.
 
UP NEXT
  • UCCS' spring season continues next Monday, Mar. 14 as the Mountain Lions head to Alameda, Calif. to compete in the two-day Tim Tierney Pioneer Shoot Out, hosted by California State University East Bay.
